Does anybody use or have used spoons to fish for bass?
Ive seen a video on youtube about offshore structure fishing and the guy used 3 lures. Flutter Spoon,Carolina Rig & a Jig.
On the video it was amazing to see how bass hit the spoon four times in a row before actually getting a decent hit and landing a 4-5lber. Then he showed how the bass chased it off the bottom structure in 20feet of water with about 4-5 streaks heading out from the structure on his fish finder. On the Carolina, the bass devoured his plastic and he had to put on new plastics often and the jig produced the biggest bass.
I decided to try this old school lure and knowing its not the best lure to use when there's a lot of cover I headed for deeper more open water the weekend & I was smashing them later in the morning.
I used a 28g Sensation spoon. It casts a mile. Make sure you have a fully spooled reel when casting these because they just keep on flying. I do not recommend a small spinning reel when throwing these as you will run out of line.
I constantly jerked the spoon back to me and letting it flutter down for 3-4 seconds.
I compared a KVD perfect plastics koffee scented swimbait with a screw in weighted hook, a carolina rig with a berkley scented large brush hog, lipless crankbait, 1 oz spinnerbait, and and a jig.
Out of all those lures, the spoon produced me about 7 fish in a matter of 20 minutes at 10 in the morning. The carolina produced me 3 fish and the swimbait, fished deep and slow, produced about 3 and only got picked up when I let it rest on the bottom for a few seconds. On the Lipless crank I got a small dink and the Jig produced me NADA.
Was strange to see that the lure with the most action and speed outfished plastics when the bite seemed to slow down. Its one of those old school lures that we tend to forget to use that is very effective when bass heads deeper when the water heats up.
Just shows you to be different from time to time and not to always follow the "rules".

We used mainly spoons for bass growing up and they worked, i still remember my Tassie devil spoons! Thanks for an interesting read.
Old school is cool.
Zona was trolling for smallmouth using a 50 year old metal spoon\blade bait in 35 degree FAHRENHEIT WATER on saturdays episode of twgfs on espn. And they were trolling at a decent speed in temp. where bass should be inactive. they landed some nice ones too.

I still have 2 Tasmanian Devil spoons. By the sounds of this they definitely need to come out of hiding in my tackle box.
