Teaching Youngsters - pomerob - 05-30-2007
I know a few off you have youngsters, what would be your best advice for teaching youngster how to fish. I know Lukas and bassa shared a method of teaching to detect a bite and how to strike.
Anything that will help me get Tom to a level of independance would be appreciated
Shame when we were at Witbank the only fish that bit Thomas's lure caused him to get so excited that he struck and pulled the rod all the way over his head and to the floor, leaving loads of slack and ample time for the fish to get away.

Try and give them a high ratio reel, something that he can turn at his phase without allowing the fish to get that much slack line! Let them use baits like cranks and spinnerbaits, this will keep them busy while the bait hits some sort of structure and also provide more hooks to get the fish on the line. Also maybe try and find schools of bass even though they are small, to them the size doesn?t matter. If they don?t catch anything for the whole day going on for a few trips in a row they will lose interest. The BASSMASTER magazine got a nice section on how to teach children how to fish!

You must bring him down for weekend to Inanda in the summer. He will have bites all the time and soon pick up when to stike or not. Most times the fooshie will be caught by it selfand he will just love it! :lol:

Rob, the Bassa bite detecting method works as follow, I must say Marco was not impressed until I made a game out of it, but it did help alot.
Rig a rod, reel and line with a weightless hook and any plastick bait of his/her/your choice, even a paper clip will work, then hook an elastick band. Blind fold the kid and put your finger though the elastick band, then tell the kid to strike and keep the line tight after the strike as soon as they feel the line move.
Marco got caught the fiirst 3 times after that he nailed it every single time, even if the presure was just increasing slightly on the line.
Good luck and please be carefull of the sharp end of the hooks.

Thanks Norkie, are you offering to babysit? He is a HDHT kid and cant sit still for more than a couple of minutes. 2 hrs at a time max on the boat with constant attention
VX I am not confident enough to let him loose with cranks just yet
he uses a close face Abu-matic which cuts out most of his tangles. He has only just turned 7

Another piece of advice is get someone else to show him...and I am not being funny or sarcastic pomerob, you have to believe me. I saw this with Marco, he recieved alot from me but I tend to get impatient and then he goes into stuff-you mode. Another person has far more patients with your kid than you will ever imagin. Some times we cannot understand why they do something a specific way and it is so different from what we tell them to do but it is the reality. We are not expert trainers and lecturers and you need to get him into program mode before he can do it they way you want him to do it and this in it self is a challenge.
Another thing I picked up from Marco is when I am busy with a rod in my hand and he is struggling he stopped asking for help because I would get irretated for being desturbed by him. When he asks for help I reel my line in fast and put my rod down and then he gets the full attention he deserves. For us it is no big deal to strugle but for them it can be real brain teasers and the problem can escalate quite quikly to the point of no return. Then it is a question of cut the old line and respool again and that takes far longer than untangling a few knots and not the entire spool of line.
As I have said before, I am not interested in my own pb it is his pb that is important to me, and until he is totally out of my hands I will not get irrretated again. After all it is better to have him as a fishing buddy than some one who can make me look like a fool..lmao.

Pomee, leave your rod in the hatch and let him fish on his own, that way you can concentrate on what he is doing and he won't feel like he is disturbing you.
Secondly, talk him through things but don't try take over, let him feel the results first hand about what he does wrong or right.
Teach him to watch his line and not just feel for the bite, weightless or small mojo is the best for this.

One day when I'm getting kids they will have a rod in there cot just to make sure they learn to like fishing and how to use the rod for when they are a bit bigger and ready to go fishing! I must admit I think that rubber band story is a good thing doesn?t matter what size the beginner!

What AWESOME AWESOME tips....
I've reflected on my outings with my boyz and have thought of my behaviour on some of the occasions and sad at my behaviour on some of the occasions.... :oops: :-(
Leave my rod in the rod locker in future.... The problem is my boyz want me to fish as they want to compete with me.... They very proud of daddies fishing abilities and enjoy it when I fish with them... They don't want me to watch as they say it isn't fair and want dadda to fish with them.... My heart is aching right now thinking of the comments they've made to me while on the boat with dadda... They have so much patients and tolerance for dadda when he fishes...
Dang my babies are amazing!!!! I love them soooo much and can't wait to fooooosh with them again!!!!
