Newer than new, well just about almost - Whiskers81 - 11-27-2018 Hi All, Been fishing since I was about 4 or 5, but it was all "papgooi". Then I got into flyfishing and I have caught various species (Baber, modderbek, trout, large and small scale yellow fish as well as bass) on fly. I have never owed and or fished for bass with spinning rods and reels and baitcasters. I have just bought a Shimano Stimula AX Tough 7" rod and now I am in the market for a reel to pair with it. As Baitcasting is not my forte I am here to learn. Thanks Whiskers RE: Newer than new, well just about almost - Jim_From_Zim - 11-28-2018 Ah, the new convert to a bait caster... ![]() There is plenty of info on this site, just search for it in the search function. The subject has been beaten to death. But your best source of info is from Youtube - how to set it up, line type, backing, setting, casting etc Oh, and make sure you dont get caught out at the tackle shop when you purchase reels. Rather do your internet homework, figure out what you want then go buy one. The tackle shops will smouss you sommer anything they need to get rid of, especially if you are a new guy to the game. RE: Newer than new, well just about almost - Whiskers81 - 12-03-2018 Hi Jim, Thank you for the info. I'm starting off "cheap" like i did 10 odd years with fly fishing, Got a Shimano Stimula 7" rod with a Shimano Sienna 2500 reel. I went with 12lb mono line on this setup. And will actively starting testing and fishing after christmas (apparently retail aint for sissies!). I'm fortunate that I have some friends thats bait casting or spinning for bass already so I'm also using them for info along the way. Wise choice to start with and good selection for the line. I like the smaller spinning reels, more comphy in the hands. Just make sure the spool is full to get casting distance. Mono can be a pain if you want to throw light mojo/texas rigs as mono floats. But you'll get the hang of it quickly and use slightly heavier weights to get the line down |
