Boating Chow - Smeegle - 11-23-2006 Hi Guys, This may seem like a daft topic at first, but I've been wondering what others do for food when spending an entire day on the boat fishing. Obviously with the main focus being fishing, you don't want to waste too much time cooking or preparing food during the day. And once serious bassers thumb has set in, you don't want to eat anything too complicated or messy. I just find it such a mission preparing food for a days outing, which obviously should be pretty healthy and nourishing to keep me going all day. It's often too easy to just grap something along the way, usually chips or whatever, but that aint too good for the waist! I usually take a flask of coffee and some rusks (not great), or cookies and milk (not great either) for breakfast. If I didn't get to making some rolls or sarmies the night before, I sometimes whip up a braai on the boat (true SA style) and make some boerie rolls for lunch (no comment), and then fill in the gaps with bananas, apples etc. I saw an ad in Stywe Lyne a while back for food packs a guy was supplying, something like an army rat pack. I thought that was a really good idea, just a bit pricey, but I guess you pay for convenience. What are your thoughts on this? Any tips or advice would be appreciated! - lazy-ike - 11-23-2006 6 hotdogs is the way to go. when i fish i forget about everything, i usualy chow the other 4 hotdogs on my way home. food is not an issue for me drinks are. i've fished a day without drinking anything through the hottest part...felt pretty K@K. - Guest - 11-23-2006 A bag of ice in the live well with a 2l pepsi lite, chewing gum, wine gums and biltong......done! - pomerob - 11-23-2006 For me it is sammies, cold pizza or cold chicken forced into a roll. 1 X fonties chicken and 3 rolls, is a good balanced diet good for 1 day on the water  - bassmaster - 11-23-2006 Hey Smeegle! Not a daft topic at all. I hardly ever eat when fishing, hence my big build! lol Seriously though. What I do is have an energy bar on the way to the water and an energade. I then have another energade at lunch time. If I am lucky enough to have some packed zaams then I might eat one... and I do mean, might. The only thing I concentrate on these days is fluid. Fluid is easy to consume quickly and keeps the dehydration headache away. You can eat as much as you like when the sun goes down..... Now smoking on the other had is great!! Keeps the hunger away and just like in a resturant as soon as you light up the food arrives, when fishing as soon as you light up a fish bites! lol
- andrer - 11-23-2006 Hi Smeegle.. First prize is BOTTLES CHICKEN also know as Windhoek larger. Otherwise throw in a grilled chicken, some rolls and mayos from pick and pay... cheap, tasty and fulling - robfisher - 11-23-2006 Awesome topic? one that actually need some attention with Team Dinger as well? when we first started bass fishing and we fished from the side of dams we used to take a little gas braai thingy and at around 08:30 we would fire it up and make the most awesome bacon rolls? and then of course we would wash it down with coffee from a flask? we would also take snacks and drink galore? Then came the boat? can?t cook bacon on the boat because of the flying fat? so we would prepare readymade bacon rolls? not as nice but still very yummy? then that became too much of a schlep and then I roped my daughters into making samies and things? the novelty of that soon wore off? and Richard girlfriend made samies? that too has worn off and now we grab a sausage roll and pie or two from the petrol garage while we fill up and that?s it? well apart from some chocolate and other crap bought at the same time? the only thing that has remained constant throughout is the multiple bottles of iced tea that I drink all day? And yes we also smoke ourselves to death all day too! Nothing like a good smoke after a good catch to calm the nerves. ;-) - drew - 11-23-2006 The only time I chow on my boat is when Fab is with me. I take 3 or 4 beers, 1 litre fruit juice, 1 litre water and some coke. Often I'll take a packet of chips and they don't get eaten...... also smoke myself into oblivion. - basstid - 11-23-2006 Maybe a couple packed zams. Biltong is a must. 3 or 4 beers(not essential) Some other liquids to beat the dehydration(coke etc....) And you are spot on BM about the smoking, its like waiting for a bus here you can wait fo ages but as soon as you light a smoke the bus seems to appear as from nowhere. :x Although nothing beats saving that hunger for a decent braai after a hard days fishing. - tolla - 11-23-2006 i see alot of you smoke on the water while fishing, where do the stompies go? - pomerob - 11-23-2006 In the water I'm afraid. - mumro - 11-23-2006 a dozen pies...a dozen samoosas...4 cans coldrinks and some biltong  - basstid - 11-23-2006 Ive always had the habbit of putting my stompies into an empty bottle or something. I cant stand littering :x - basstid - 11-23-2006 Not on the same topic, more in the lines of foriegn substances going into the water (not worth a forum) Where do most of you guys pee while out on the water ? Or is that just a stupid question ?
- Guest - 11-23-2006 food has become like a ritual. every morning of a comp you will find us at the engen garage (bimbos) buying a breakfast pitta and a can of coke for breakfast while filling the boat with petrol. we fill the cooler box under the seats with ice, 2 x kit kats, 2 x 1 litre cokes because they are easier to drink out of and sometimes a bottle of water. the night before i cook 12 porkers (must be escort) and put a little tomatoe sause and hot english mustard on rolls. shannon normally only eats 4 or 5, i am sure his dogs wait in antisipation for us to get home to share their roll or 2. on any other days its bimbos for breakfast pitas, 2 x cheese burgers and a litre of coke. |
