Triton trailer service - Halfabee - 09-22-2014

Hi, can anyone recommend a place to get my Triton trailer serviced. General service to check the oil hubs, electronic etc. Also my emergency brake cable is bust and needs to be fixed. The breaks on the trailer not working either since the cable broke.
Been to the new Triton dealer in Edenvale but they don't service trailers.
I am in the fourways area so if there is a place around JHB that would be great.

On another point, with the Triton Trailer or any trailer with a breaking system apparently one can wire up the reverse light on the car to disable the trailer breaks when reversing. Where can I get this done?

Re: Triton trailer service - Ianversfeld - 09-22-2014

HI

Yes it can be done. I have wired up my bakkie to give power from pin number 2 on the female side, when reverse lights come on. Then u need to wire up the solenoid to receive power from pin number 2 on the male socket side.

I have replaced the complete break actuator about 2 weeks ago. It was cheaper to replace the whole "head" unit than to repair the inner parts. (ordered from the states).

I have a new axle on my trailer, due to mine bending after hitting a huge pothole, but I would recommend taking your trailer to a guy like Geoff Shiers
Tel: 011 865 5161 Cell: 082 650 8839 Mail: geoff@laaxle.com. He builds these things and can help you out with parts and info.

Hope you come right. Give me a shout if you need help. PS: I have added a reverse light to the back of my trailer for launching in the dark. I also pull the power off that pin 2 that receives power from the reverse lights.

Brilliant, thanks for the info. Great help, will definitely get hold of Geoff. Might be giving you a call if needed.

Re: Triton trailer service - robfisher - 09-25-2014

Now I need to find someone in Durban that can do a service on a Triton trailer!

I have tried a few auto electricians but they just say I need to give them docs on the system because they don't understand the braking system. :-(

Re: Triton trailer service - Pietman - 09-26-2014

Try Silverlake Marine in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape. They galvanized my Triton trailor, rewire everything and fixed my whole braking system. And I am very happy with the work they'd done. There number is 042-2941500. Speak to Craig Nel .

Thanks Pietman! I would take my boat and trailer to them no question... I really should have stayed an extra day at inter-provs last year and popped in and got them to do all the necessary.

Re: Triton trailer service - Halfabee - 10-14-2014

Ended up servicing trailer myself. Suprisingly easy after a bit of investigation. The Triton is probably on a UFP made trailer. They have 3 types of brake surge systems or actuators. Search utube for UFP actuator. There are some really good vids on the actuator, bleeding the brakes and also changing the hub oil. Mine was the A-60 model actuator. Can find model number on the break neck part of the trailer. The owners manual for the actuator also really helps or find an online copy at http://www.ufpnet.com.

So I pulled out the actuator, cleaned it up and luckily managed to fix the leak in the main cylinder. But if u need to order parts or a whole new actuator I found http://www.trailerandtruckparts.com/UFP ... c_360.html who have everything u need. Suprisingly a whole new actuator is relatively cheap. Less than 2k shipped from usa. Pulling it apart cleaning and reasembling is very easy

Bleeding the brakes is quite easy as well just a dirty job and takes sometime but I managed to do it by myself. Easier with two people but possible on your own as the master cylinder push bar can be locked in a compressed position so u can run back and forth to pump lock and then blead the brake. Utube also has a few good vids on this

Only thing I still need to do is change the oil in the hubs. Also a really easy excercise to do. Unscrew plug in the hub, drain the oil and refill the hub with new oil. Simple and easy to do. The only problem is trying to find the correct oil to use in the hub. Manufacturer recommends a 50W oil or some places call it hub oil. I haven't had any luck finding it locally yet and everyone I have asked looked at me like I am mad and never heard of oil hubs and no such thing as 50w oil. But it is available in usa

So if anyone knows where I can get 50W (50 weight) oil or hub oil please let me know

All in all in really nice piece of maintenance to do and really not hard. Even for a mechanically challenged person like myself.
