My take on Theewaters:

Bank angling: possible around the bridge, but not sure about the safety there nowadays

Boat traffic: busy on the public side of the bridge, get yourself a yellow permit and the conservation area is very quiet

Best times: October to March

Entry fees: last time I was there it was R50 to launch

Species: largemouth, carp (kill the b#stards), , barbel (kill the f#4kers), bluegill, trout, others?

Baits: spinnerbaits, lizards (junebug), cranks

Amenities: camp site, restaurant, ablutions etc at the yacht club

Security: ok at the yacht club, not sure about the bridge area, we used to launch there but nobody does so any more

Other warnings: wind, it can get dangerous very quickly when the wind comes up

BTW, has anybody noticed the plane flying over Theewaters on Google Earth: 34° 1'41.38"S 19°14'29.98"E

A (very) brief history of Theewaters.

It's recently starting coming back on form after many years of terrible fishing, during which time an out of control carp and barbel population has wrought havoc on the bass, not to mention pollution problems and water muddied after the dept of nature conservation (?) ripped out all the trees lining the dam and caused it to become murky.

I know that SABAA has asked members to avoid the dam during this years spawn in order to give the bass a chance to breed and hopefully give the population a boost. Maybe the members of this site would take that into account and give it a miss for a couple of months for the long term benefit that we will all enjoy as a result.

crankbaits - white or any colour that works for you
jigs - white, black and blue, rootbeer, watermelon
topsurface - zaras, dying flutters pop-r, lucky 13

Following on with what bassassin noted, they generally ask that bass fishing take place after the spawn ie around about from the end of september - first week in october and also there is an annual fee at the gate, apart from your launch, which is about R150.00. This is to allow monies to go towards funding the rescue boat should you so need it, cos you get a sticker with the emergency number on to stick on your boat!!..Apart from that BECAREFUL of the wind there!!! it is furking dangerous...ask me I know, lost a windscreen and trolling motor in those bloody waves and almost sank on a mates boat!!...NOT funny!!.. :blue-shock: The general rule of thumb for Both Quaggas and Theewaters is that any weather prediction with a "W" in it...avoid going there!!ie south West or northWest...belive me it works most of the time!!! Even if it states Light north westerly you can bet your backside the wind's going to come up later in the day!!!

Oh, one other thing, to fish the area from under the bridge (R321) you need a permit!!..or from map reference K15 to the right!!...If the Nature conservation catches you there without the permit a large fine is imposed as well as THEY will confiscate your boat. :blue-evil: There is a guy that you can contact for a permit which he will organise for you and there is a fee involved......his name is ummm....BERGIE. It takes about two weeks...if you lucky!!! :blue-rolleyes:

Hows that plane bassassin ? clearly you sudied that map well. I have topographicals on all SABAA venues including Applethwaite and Eikenhof that are over 20 years old that were donated to me - very interesting hand drawn maps of the big venues in Natal too which I may use someday when Rob gives me an invite

It's no fun trying to make your way back to the launch site from the sawmills when the south easter comes up either. The bridge acts as a funnel, big waves, going under it is pretty scary on days like that. Large waves and low lying bass boats don't mix well.
