Berg River Dam

I had a meeting with a client between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek earlier today and decided to take a drive to the new Berg River Dam. I persuaded the guy at the gate to let me through to the wall area. It really looks like a lekker dam, very clear with a slight tea tinge, (Rooibos rather than Ceylon). If we thought that Brandvlei had little visible structure then this has even less. There are some nice points and drop offs, very little timber or plant cover though. Hopefully the smallies are growing huge waiting for the day that we can start catching them.

I didn't have a camera but took a couple of photos with my cell phone.<br>

I am a bit concerned as smallies do not like acid water and that looks to me water with the wrong ph, that tea colour or tannin colour.

you are allowed to catch f you know a farmer or some one living on the dam.

its on dean list to open for fishing.he is just very busy

I know that there are smallies there, I've caught them in that part of the river while fly fishing for trout. There are also some good rainbows but I always caught more bass than trout.

It is possible to fish from the bank already, if you go through the back of Franschhoek you can drive right up to the water where the river flows in. It's on my agenda as well. A boat will be a necessity thought to reach all the best structure, I doubt whether the city of CT will allow boats there though, maybe electric motors will get the nod, I don't think outboards will ever be allowed.

There was apparently an article in the Argus recently saying that the water affairs are yet to have the dam handed over to them, and they are going to open sites for recreation purposes including water skiing.....therefore i cant see why they wont allow us to fiss...cos its quite a big dam :blue-biggrin: Lets hope anyway!!!

The dam covers an area of 500 ha. I can assure you guys there are some nice structure - I went in there when they were still building the dam... I have also heard that they plan to build a restaurant there - losts of stories - we will see. In the mean time the fish are spawning and growing bigger day by day.... :blue-lol:

I've also put 30 odd barbel in,
so if the smallies dont bite,we can all catch barbel!!!!

The Berg river has some nice barbel, big ones.

I have also heard that they will be allowing boats sooner or later on the dam. It is a tourist attrcation and I can only imagine they will allow water sports there... or so I hope...

i don't wanna fish that dam if it is trolling motor only, dis k@k soek!
as carl said if the ph is very high the fish tend not to breed very well (smallies), i have seen some nice trout in theewaters , but i don't know if they breed very well.
