Mofam in Winter!

Hi guy's,

I'm going up to Mofam this coming Saturday with a buddy. I've booked a boat and am hoping that the water is not too icy but after these cold fronts coming thru this week, I have serious doubts!

I know it's almost the middle of winter and the largemouths will be very lethargic but it will be a first time at this water for me as I have only recently got back into bass fishing.

Can anyone please give me a few tips on what baits to use ?

I have fished mofam in the winter a good few times and it can be very good but that is after a few days of stable weather so I don't know how good it will be in a front but then again I have fished in fronts before but that was during the ass end of winter and caught some decent fish.

I mainly throw jigs during this time football and flipping and finesse versions of the two, colours that have worked best for me are Black and Blue, Green Pumpkin & Blue and Peanut Butter & Jelly with a nice trailer adding some rattles to the jig does improve the bite if the water is a bit stained. Giving the jig a good splash of oil based craw or garlic spray this does help them hold on a bit longer and helps the jig slip through the cover a bit better as you will have to be fishing a lot closer or in the cover during a front.

Hi Rob, there were 12 of us on the water there last week. The water level has just come up and and is freezing cold. We managed a couple fish each on cranks and plastics. Other guys threw spinnerbaits and jigs but no bait seemed to be outdoing the rest. Opportunistic reaction bites seemed to be the call of the day....

I'll definitely try cranks as well as jig's and plastic worms. I was also thinking about maybe a Rojas frog sunk deep and very slowly bounced around the bottom to maybe entice a big daddy largie into a reaction bite.

Also maybe a Rapala xrap slash bait allowed to sink deep and slow with the odd twitch. I used this method a lot at Bullshoek in the middle of the day when it was a bit quiet, quite effectively in the deeper water.

The cold fronts will be gone by Thursday so hopefully the barometer will have come up a bit by Saturday which according to windfinder is supposed to be a sunny day.

The next rain after Saturday is supposed to be Sunday. I'll put a report in on Monday.

Get yourself a pack of junebug Coontails on a texas against the rocks on the deeper side. The spotties live them.

I have also fished Mofam quite a few times in winter over the years. I have had some really good days and some extremely tough ones.
Mainly caught on weightless senko, texas creatures, letting it soak, and also jigs.
If you strike it lucky with a sunny warm day throw a topwater, hell if its cold throw a topwater anyway.
