Plus you should be sorting out access to our dam and not playing in the forums! :blue-biggrin:

Not even KVD will beat the top pros in the world consistently with cheap equipment.

@ Ninja, give your boat with electronics and fishing gear to KVD and let us see where he finishes, even mine will not be good enough.

Sorry BM, I do not agree... :blue-biggrin: :blue-badgrin:
I found my fishing to rapidly improve when I started upgrading gear, more specifically rods and line. What I found to have an even greater effect is to shop around and test different rods for different aplications, rather than buying a one rod fits all applications. Matching line to rod actions and reel speeds, to me, is vital.
The thing is, you do not know about the bass you did not feel, because you did not feel him! Or when you only feel that fish when he spits your lure out?? You sometimes put yourself at fault for losing a fish, when it was actually a rod that is not up for the job (happens with cranking a lot). You think you know, until you uprgade and then you never go back. Its like opening a door or stepping over a line. Once you do it, you will not want to go back.
I am by no means saying you cannot win a comp on lower quality gear, because you can, and I by no means say you will not blank with the best kit, because you will. But it does help. And even if it helps you feel just that one strike more, or make you land just that one crazy smally, its well worth it. Most of the time one fish seperates the winner from the pack.
I believe their is a upper limit, but then again, I have not opened the most expensive door yet so cannot really comment. All I know is, the upgrade worke for me.

Kak example CBC, you know he will come rock bottom last but he will do a damn site better than a social weekend angler using his equipmemt in the same compo, get it? :blue-badgrin:
You eventualy get to a point were experience and top equipment match up and will help to produce consistantly, my point is that with experience you can do okay even if you use kak equipmenmt but with no experience even the best equipment in the world will help you nothing.

I listened to some of the hardebaarde when I started boat fishing in comps last year.
I splashed out on 2 nice Powell rods - one glass rod (703CB) for cranking and another general purpose worming rod (704CEF). I paired both of them with Quantum PT Tours and have not regretted the decision at all.
These rod gave me a new largemouth and smallmouth PB in the last year and assisted in getting my teams into the money on 2 occasions during comps. It is like August said once you open that door you don't want to go back.
Yes a cheap golf can get you from A-B but it is going to battle to tow a boat... :blue-doubt:

Working hard at it Rob. Soon we will be back there!

No offense meant Neels.
Funny though that all guys who have upgraded, never down graded again.
There are more bassers upgrading than downgrading, makes me wonder.

I really dont mind if guys disagree with me. I expected it... the point I was making is that mid range equipment can do just as well as high end equipment. No one said cheap equipment is what you should go for though. Rob actually said it best, buy what your pocket can afford.
Ill carry on fishing with my mid range euqipment forever and still do just as well as I always have, who knows, it may even make me fish harder and concentrate more than most people because I cant rely on feeling the finest of bite or what ever it may be.
One thing I can tell you though.... everyone will have a day where the guy with the mid range equipment is going to kick your ass on the water because it is their day... and then your high end equipment is really gonna seem like money well spent! :blue-lol: :blue-lol:
I dont drive a porsch because I cant afford it but I can still get to where I am going every time in my bakkie. :blue-cool:

Thanx Guys
All your answers are relevant and interesting, as you put it CBC no-one down grades thier equipment so I will have a look at a better setup than what I have currently - my rods are fine for now as they served me well at the Bett
Mainly my reels need a good look at as it was mentioned reels should not pack up after four years, but unfortunatley the ammount of abuse my reels take not much will last me long
Thanx once again for the advice - it was a good read :eusa_clap:

This year's mid-range stuff was high-end 5 years ago! It's not as if catch-rates amongst the pro's have steadily gone up over the years to keep pace with advancing technology.
The return on investment (increase in catch rates) curve flattens very quickly once you start spending more than R1500 on a rod.

No argument here.
