Toadee makes an interesting point. With technology and the market race improving at an ever increasing pace, how exactly can one compare the quality vs say 5 years ago. If you are one of those guys who is always on the lookout for the new stuff, you will end up with too many choices and not enough bucks.
I guess somewhere you have to draw a line and would imagine it is at price as has been said.

- smurf - 08-04-2011

How right you are...Put KVD onto ,say,Wriggleswade or Clanwilliam and he will probably not do so well against our SA anglers...why...because he has a host of Motorguide,ProShop,Strike King and the rest of the sposored anglers feeding him information about his next venue as to how and where it is fishing.Make no mistake, these Pros are good but so would you be if you were in their sposored shoes.Imagine you had 20 'spotter' anglers bringing you up to speed prior to each money comp...you would be 'da bomb' too.. :blue-neutral:

Exactly that Smurf.....

Rob, I am with you on this one. I have fished many facets and one thing I learnt is buy the best the first time and save yourself time and money of changing again. Chris next time we are the water I will lend you one of my combos. If you still don't know the difference after that, then yes it makes no difference.

Good sensitive blanks that are light, have lots of cut proof guides (micro ones for me) will mean feeling more bites, fishing longer without getting tired, and better performance under load.

A decent reel (the first thing on the shopping list) will give you better line lay, moving parts stay in line and therefore last longer. They cast further, are lighter and have very smooth powerful drags.

I would rather have 1 decent all round combo than 6 lower end combos.

P.S I am also no tycoon, I just have a garage full of tackle that I should never have bought.

This is why I love these forums - advice is free!!

Good solid advice there bblunt.

Buy the best you an afford. And you don't need 10 rods to start with. Get 2 - one for worming and one for cranking and build on that as time and your budget allows.

- plasticman - 08-09-2011

Navman,that is exactly what CBC,told me,but in a more uitk@k fashion. :blue-biggrin:

Howzit PM...dit you guys get to fish up north? I did a quick overnighter to David-Thys' place at Bulshoek. Jeepers it was cold. When I launched the boat it was 2 degrees Celcius this morning. The dew on my boat cover actually had ice on it.

It did warm up to a very nice 24 degrees later on. I did a little bit of fishing with my daughter (or should I say watching CBC and Roy in action)

Hi all. I am new to posting and really love reading all your posts...and i might be picking up on this topic a little late but i am sure i will get better over time. ;-)

I am using bottom-mid range Shimano rods and reels with rather new Fluoro line. It happens ever so often when i would think it is time for an upgrade. All i normally do, seeing that i am still spending way too much on my wife and don't have the cash to spend on expensive gear, is to really spend time servicing my reel... replacing my line and just cleaning my gear.

I really think that top of the range gear would make a difference, especially in the personal enjoyment of the sport, but clean, functional equipment in a good working order would be ju8st as efficient.

Thanx Barry I will take you up on that offer, all we need now is a play date.. :blue-biggrin: [/quote]

Will let you know when go and practice again, probably Sat 20th.

i cannot afford cheap tackle anymore...i have spent more money buying cheap than my equipment i have now...which took me a couple of years to aquire...if i hadnt wasted my money on the cheap stuff in the beginning... i would have been able to get my good stuff a lot quicker....do i catch more fish since i invested in all my gloomis and shimano dcs i think so...i now save a lot of money in not having to replace equipment...the problem was that i use to run the bearings on the reels and had to replace them...since i have invested in callcutta dc reels i have not had to replace them...nor have i ever had to service them...and they still run smother than any cheaper reel on the market.

i can now cast further which results in my lure being in the strike zone longer...i can now pitch more acurately and futher resulting in quiter presentations...the problem is i no longer fish comps so i dont really need the good stuff i have anymore...and if i did start again i would invest in all the new nrx gloomis rods and a new set of dc reels...because at the end of the day your rod and reel is the link between you and the fish..and in my opinion that is what counts the most...a badly selected rod could be the diffrence between landing a fish and loosing R100 000 boat if jumps and comes off....smooth drag and correct action on the rod makes all the difference...even more important than the line...because if the rod is correctly selected it will compensate for the bad selection of line...thats why i spend R100 on line and R10 000 on the rod and reel.

at the end of the day it is all about you...what suits you...do you fish comps if so and you plan on spending 3 weekends a month on the water 12 hours a day...my advice would be spend the money...it does wonders for your confidence...if you are weekend warrior why waste the money..so what if you loose a big fish...it would just be a good excuse to go fish again tomorrow.

a free tip... learn to watch your line...no matter how sensitive your rod or line is ...you will always see the twitch in the line if you know what to look for...no matter how subtle the bite.

Sounds good Barry I will let you know closer to the time
CS - That makes sense thanx for your input
