- Brenden - 03-15-2013 Amen Billy and Roy, it is disturbing to see how poorly attended last nights conservation talk was by our members both WCBAA and BFSA. The fact that CN is using Rotonone has merit and if we as bass anglers realise that as passionate as we are about our bass, they will and do have their place in our waters if we support CN and not try to opose what they are doing. Dean Impson, head of CN was there and we as bass anglers have his support and he understands the economic impact that bass fishing has. if the event was better attended then all could be educated and also have a chance to chat with Dean about the rotonone. It is a little disapointing to see posts like this after all the effort that has been made by the WCBAA conservation team to enlighten all of us on what is really going on. Gents I am aware that some of us live far away, but before we go on a stone throwing excersize, please rather make an attempt to come to these conservation talks when they are held. I posted a report a while ago on the outcome of the F.A.F meeting and what was going to happen with the rotone project. Boatwrapper Vincent is the BFSA representative at the WCBAA meetings and will always keep you informed of what is happenign with FAF, WCBAA and conservation issues. Rather give him a call and maybe he can shed light on the issues before getting into a heated debate about things like this. ATTEND THE MEETINGS AND LEARN GUYS. thanks to WCBAA and Olaf and his team for last nights talk. - BuzzLiteBeer - 03-21-2013 It's good to see guys taking more interest in this topic and educating themselves about river treatment methods and their impact. The followup treatment will probably kill a lot of the new generation yellows and redfins. The next Cape Nature Freshwater Angling Forum meeting is scheduled for 26th March 2013 afrom 6pm to 9pm and will take place at the CPS clubroom in Cape Town. If anyone is interested I will make the minutes of the FAF meeting available in due course. - BuzzLiteBeer - 03-25-2013 BuzzLiteBeer Wrote:It's good to see guys taking more interest in this topic and educating themselves about river treatment methods and their impact. Heard from someone who was there that most of the new generation yellows and redfins didn't survive the treatment. Tomorrow's meeting looks like it's going to be a heated one. Seems that there were some "problems". AGENDA ITEMS INCLUDE · Freshwater angling licenses · Commercial fisheries on alien fishes · Rondegat update (presentation by Riaan van der Walt) · List of rivers for alien fish control update · Trout poaching on CPS rivers · Baseline fish surveys of public dams Disclaimer: ALL comments are made in my personal capacity and not on behalf of the CPS. - Riprap - 03-26-2013 Heated or not, it's still illogical! If the goal is to save the redfins etc why not create sanctuaries where the species can be preserved and bred for future generations? This fiddling and playing with poison in the environment is benefitting who and what, all it does is create a lot of emotion and sensationalism in my opinion. CapeNature Workshop : Rotenone Part 2 - BuzzLiteBeer - 05-29-2013 CapeNature Workshop to discuss list of rivers for alien eradication. 30 May 2013 - Dean Impson CapeNature wants to improve its relationships with key stakeholders with an interest in fish and inland water conservation, and avoid some of the mistakes it made to date in planning and implementing phase 1 of the project. These mistakes primarily related to poor communication, especially with the angling community at key times, and inadequate final planning and implementation of certain aspects of the project, especially during the first Rondegat treatment. Key stakeholders agree that future piscicide projects will receive much less opposition if there is agreement on the list of rivers requiring alien fish control, a timeline for rehabilitation projects to take place, and a commitment by project implementers to ensure that best practice is rigorously agreed to. To achieve the above, CapeNature wishes to hold a workshop on 30 May 2013, attended by key organisations. Disclaimer: ALL comments are made in my personal capacity and not on behalf of the CPS. - Headbutt - 05-29-2013 If only as an interested onlooker I would like to attend; please let me know the venue details/times. John. - Riprap - 05-29-2013 I commend CPS on their transparency and honesty to failure admissions. By taking it one step further and inviting the public (incl. headbutt and the public), then we are really talking progress and in which some solutions offered may very well be what they never thought of. I've always found that by involving outsiders in a brain storming, you very often get ideas that those deeply involved with blinkers on, haven't thought of! Some food for thought. Still, I sincerely hope that there are populations of endangered species being bred in controlled conditions to supplement the natural populations once they succeed in restoring systems?? :blue-rolleyes: There is no disclaimer on my posts, I rather say it as I see it. :blue-smile: - Riprap - 05-29-2013 Brenden & other - very short notice on this site but perhaps you guys could share the details for others who are interested. :blue-question: - Brenden - 05-29-2013 Just for the record, my term as WP chairman has come to its end as of today. Im sure the conservation commitee will attend and if I do get fed information regarding conservation then I will gladly share it on this forum - smurf - 05-30-2013 I am almost sure the Head of Cape Nature did not wake up yesterday and decide to have a meeting tomorrow to discuss, among other things, poor communication ! It would really be nice to get a decent heads up in terms of some notice so the various facets can participate. With such short notice you can expect a small turnout (is that the intention ?) then the Department would naturally assume there is a 'lack of interest',which is not the case. Brenden,is there a working Conservation Committee ? Not heard much about what they are up to...I wouldn't mind proposing three conservation issues: Shock harvesting of barbel in Brandvlei/Kwaggas Shock harvesting of barbel in Theewaterskloof. Shock harvesting of barbel in Voelvlei, stocking of gilcristella and smallmouth - Brenden - 05-30-2013 Hi Smurf, to answer your question, Yes the conservation committee is still active. Keep this in mind. I applied to CN for a license to long line barbell and was advised by Jaco VIsser from Stellenbosch university to hold on as DWAF is busy with a program. Because this is run under government derestriction we cannot just go out there and do our own thing. Our committee needs to follow the lead of the various government departments. We as bass anglers cannot just go out and start taking out Carp and barble, can you imagine how it would start a war between the different angling facets? before we open our eyes, carp anglers will be dragging bags of bass out of our lakes etc. so all we can do is go to the meetings listen and watch what is going on. As passionate as I am about bass, we aren't the only anglers in SA. So all we can do is sit patiently and watch and do our best to protect our sport. not going to start another debate, just some food for thought, but for those that questioned what they get for their sabaa memberships, keep in mind that it is SABAA members that fight for the rights of our sport and make sure our fish aren't eradicated. So unfortunately we cannot just go out there and start harvesting fish. If the wrong crowd see this then it is free game for all and the next thing you have ' PREVIOUSLY DISADVANTAGED groups forming commercial fisheries on our dams and believe me there wont be bass left either. hope this helps everyone's curiosity. - Brenden - 05-30-2013 Just Tried to call Max about this meeting and he sms me back saying he is in a meeting with CN and will call me back. so there you go its been attended and represented by our conservation committee. thanks Max - smurf - 05-30-2013 Good one Max...thanks.Alot of people doing a lot 'behind the scenes',but it would be really nice to read about what these guys are unselfishly doing for the better of the sport for everyone, and give them credit for doing what they do. - jaki1979 - 05-30-2013 Agreed Smurf, and good on all involved for taking the time to preserve what we need to. Brenden, just another good point to join up with SABAA :blue-smile: - Brenden - 05-30-2013 Max did call back gents after a 5 hour meeting and promised he will do a report and we will post asap to keep all in the loop. |
