Is it right? What do you think? - bassmaster - 01-09-2006

Hi Everyone

I think I am about to open a can of worms that I should not, but what the hell lets have some fun!

Ok here is the deal. I have been fishing almost all my life and have targeted fish in many different ways. A couple of moths ago I bought my first Fly Fishing rig and the experience of catching a fish on it for the first time was amazing.

However, as the experience of fly fishing is about the hunt with small imitation fly, most fly anglers think it is totally unacceptable to tie anything else on except flies? I feel that although the hunt is great and fooling a fish with a fly is great this accounts for about 50% of the satisfaction, the other 50% is catching it on a fly rod, the feel is of the fish is amplified through the rod and makes the fight amazing.

So here is what I done or should I say do. Yes I admit it  I have tied on everything from crankbaits to softplastics and even just a piece of bread! My best results have been with soft plastics and although most fly fishermen are going to want to kill me, I find the fight on a fly rod just amazing no matter what you use. I do however, only do this if the fishing is extremely slow.

So there you have it. What do you think? Should I be burned at the stake? Or do you do the same?

Let us know.

Let the games begin!

You not the only one, so they need to kill 2 not only one now .. lol

I use a normal spinning reel on my fly rod rigged with a small yellow grub to catch muddie's on the vaal river, the fight is MUCH better when you fishing 2lbs line, a fly rod, and having a big muddie on!

Now you have to ask yourself the Question, Is this inline with any tournament rules or am I cheating now? 8O I?m a tournament fishermen and I have seen two teams been kicked off the tour because of cheating. Be careful, there is a very fine line between right and wrong here. I?m also a fly fishermen and I have never used anything else but a fly on my fly rod. But then again a plastic worm or crankbait is artificial so if you fish for Bass I guess it?s OK but for trout NO NO NO. Ask yourself if you catch a monster fish, can you brag about it? If you catch a Bass on live bait can you brag about it? It all depends on what you fishing for but stay inline with the rules. 8)

I have seen it even worse. It would and did really p off the traditional fly fishermen, but I have seen (social nothing else) I guy fishing with hand line in the streams of hogsback in the eastern cape and catching more trout than the three gents with their fancy gear put together.

I had to laugh!!!

I agree though, that tournaments and clubs/chapters have rules which have to be adhered to.

Hi

Forgot to mention that fact, I don't fish comps so no probs with breaking the rules and I would never do this at a venue where it is not allowed, meerly a recreational thing I do.

Never thought of putting a different reel on my fly rod though? Gave me some ideas. Thanks

Hi
My shad stick is an old 10wt with a small spinning reel and 30lb spider wire.
I use it to throw small spoons. Great fun when you hook a big shad.
Just thought you would like to know for those cape shad. 8)
Cheers
