Hit and Miss - Hawkeye - 06-22-2008
As part of the winning R500 voucher we were able to exchange the voucher at the Witbank skins from Outdoorsman from selected goods they had on offer. One of the items I selected was a DVD which I popped into the machine virtually after parking the Boat. The DVD is called Bigmouth Forever By Glen Lau and is a documentary of underwater photography done by a guy on SCUBA.Some items of interest that I noted :
How exceptionally quick the fish are to attack the lure/ baitfish in what appears to be summer conditions.
How a Bass inhales and spits out a spinner bait or crank withot the Bass fisher even recognising that this has happened ( Maybe this was raised in one of the earlier forums )
The advice given was to SET THE HOOK .
I guess that this would apply mostly to summer fishing patterns ??When the fish are feeding actively as well as your reflex.
I guess what they are saying is that should you suspect or think that you are partially hooked or dragging thhrough grass or weed or some sort of obstruction STRIKE It is better to Hit Than MISS
In winter conditions on the other hand I guess the opposite is true. :blue-question: You want the Bass to fully inhale the lure and feell the pressure on the line ) whilst fishing slowly before makng your strike :blue-question: Dont forget Im a newbie
What do the pros say !! OK and the not so pro???

Generally smack it as soon as you feel it, but you will find times when you keep missing the fish when you strike quickly. If you watch that video again you will see one part in it where the fish holds a worm by it's tail for quite a while before swallowing it properly. If the fish are doing this put a small amount of steady pressure on the bait, the fish will think that the worm is trying to get away and will engulf it to try prevent this, you will normally feel a heavier tap and pull when they do this, that's when you give it horns.

People are scared to put any pressure on a fish when they feel it bite, but if you try it while practicing you will see that you can normally get the fish about half way back to the boat before he lets go.

This is awesome advice Shannon… it’s something Howie has taught me recently.

It's a really good method to get fish away from structure, because he doesn't panic and try run straight into it. By the time you hook him he is far away from it. But somedays as soon as they feel the pressure they drop the lure, that's why it is best to strike quickly and if you are missing fish then you try this method.
And as for the video, I want to find a spot like the one in that video where those big girls come out of the vegetation to engulf the spinnerbaits :blue-biggrin:
