Baitcaster choices.... - jmgravenor - 09-13-2012 Hi guys, My cousin is coming over in December from the U.S and in October he is going to the Cabelas store to see what they have on sale. He asked me to compile a list of rods and reels so he get me some. I have made a VERY long list and can't decide which one to choose because I am not sure which reels and rods are reliable and strong. Please could you guys choose 3 reels and 3 rods you think I should get(must be reliable)!!!! Ok so here is the list: Casting Reels: Abu Garcia Revo S Abu Garcia Revo SX Abu Garcia Revo STX Abu Garcia Revo Premier Daiwa Exceller Quantum kinetic Quantum Accurist PT reel Quantum Catalyst Quantum Energy Quantum smoke reel Quantum EXO reel Quantum Tour Edition KVD reel Shimano Caius Shimano Caenan Shimano Citica Shimano Curado Shimano Chronarch Shimano Calais Casting Rods: Abu Garcia Veritas Abu Garcia Villain Abu Garcia Verdict Shimano Clarus Shimano Compre Shimano Crucial Shimano Cumara Quantum smoke Quantum EXO PT rod Skeet Reese Tessera Skeet Reese micro Honeycomb rod Duckett micromagic split grip rod Falcon Bucoo rod I need as many replies as possible!! Please guys! thanks - Riprap - 09-13-2012 JMG - within each rod and reel there are variants for different styles and preferences. How about you say what you prefer fishing and how you do it and perhaps you will get the answers you require?? - Toadee - 09-13-2012 Ask your cousin to order the rods online and have them delivered to his house; that way they're already packaged nicely for the flight to SA. Two tips; have him buy a roll or two of duct tape and wrap the tubes from head to tail. It saved a rod from breaking on my latest trip from the States. Also, have him wait until the Black Friday sales in November for huge discounts from most stores. You have sub $200 rods in the list but reels that run the gamut from entry-level to top-shelf so picking three is going to be tough. If I had to choose from the list I would go Shimano Chronarch and Shimano Cumara in various ratios and lengths. - jmgravenor - 09-13-2012 Guys I have all the costs sorted out already so I know what I'm dealing with. I would probably need out of the 3 reels and rods, 1 for soft plastics(bottom fishing), 1 for jigs, and 1 for crankbaits. And I Don't need to post what rod lengths I would prefer because it's going to make this much more complicated. So please if you could just choose 3 and 3 then I can start mailing my cousin. - Navrik - 09-13-2012 2 x Quantum EXO 100 PT 7.3:1 (high ratio for worming and jigs) 1 x Quantum Tour KVD Cranking Classic Casting Reels 5.3:1 (low ratio for cranking) From you list: 2 x Quantum EXO PT rods Paired with the Quantum EXO Reels Not on your list: For Cranking I would go for a Powell Max 703CB Glass Rod paired with the Cranking Reel. The Quantum EXP PT rod can also be replaced with Powell Max (703CEF and 704CEF) (also not on your list) - jmgravenor - 09-13-2012 thanks Navrik! :blue-biggrin: need more suggestions guys! - breedesmallie - 09-13-2012 I don't know on what budget you are working on but i will go with Abu revo series, and for rods ( not on your list ) Lamiglas, they are still made in USA and is the best their is on the market today. It is difficult to tell someone else what combinations. Picking out a rod is a touch and feel thing, it needs to peform right. If I can give you good advice, buy what you are comfortable with. My brother lives in the US and comes to SA once a year, i just put in my order with him for some goodies. Good luck with a difficult choise to make. - Ernst - 09-13-2012 This is like picking you a girlfriend we have different taste and likes you too so what we like and love might differ from your requirements. My 2c would be to look at your list go to your local tackle store look and feel the rods then make a decision based on that. - jmgravenor - 09-13-2012 Ernst i understand where you're coming from about the feeling. At the moment im not interested in the feeling though. I need to know which rods are reliable and that can last for a few years with good care. Reliability is what im looking for at the moment... asd - bigbassboy - 09-13-2012 i would go with navriks choice! you cant go wrong with quantum :blue-biggrin: - Toadee - 09-13-2012 jmgravenor Wrote:Ernst i understand where you're coming from about the feeling. Ernst has a very good point that you are choosing to dismiss. It's no good buying a rod because everyone says it's great only to find out that it doesn't suit you. Case in point: I find the triggers on Carrot Stix very uncomfortable. Cumara split-grips also don't fit me comfortably. You've got a list of very reliable rods that will all last a good few years with care. Go down to the tackle stores on Saturday and refine the list as far as possible by feeling the rods yourself; you'll be a lot happier in the long run.[/i] Re: asd - Navrik - 09-14-2012 bigbassboy Wrote:i would go with Navrik's choice! you cant go wrong with Quantum :blue-biggrin: I agree with what everyone says about feeling the rods and making sure they fit your style. I have the three Powell I suggested as well as one of the Quantum so you are welcome to have a look and feel of the ones I suggested to help you on your way. The Quantum EXO stuff is now freely available in SA so you should have not problems to check out the very light combos (under 10 ounces for both rod and reel). - plasticman - 09-14-2012 Young man My opinion,go REVO for the reel, you get more bang for your bucks, but no bling like a Quantum. The latest REVO's will be launched soon, even lighter for the same price. There must be a reason why REVO won at the ICAST,not just the REVO reel ,but the REVO range aswell. :blue-shock: As for rods, come visit and I will show you the difference between Falcons, and Cumara's,and Berkleys. Cheers PM - Roy - 09-14-2012 Please dont take Navriks advice you buy Quantum you will be angry at him for the rest of your life lol :blue-badgrin: :blue-badgrin: You should go get the feel for some rods so visit Plasticman and a few tackle shops and go pick up some rods. At the end of the day its what you like and what feels good in your hand and get yourself quality products. Just remember its the man behind the rod that catches the fish good equipment just makes it eazier. - August - 09-14-2012 Look Boet. You did not give us three applications. You might as well do target practice blind folded in the dark there. Anyway, here is my shot in the dark. Quantum smoke 7:1 on a smoke 7" medium fast to exstra fast tip - 10lb finesse Quantum PT Tour 7:1 on Cumara 7"2' medium heavy extra fast - 15lb for haulin big bass out off thick cover Shimano Curado 5:1 on Shimano crucial 7"2' medium "cranking" series - Lekka alround crank setup Shimano Curado 6:1 on Shimano crucial 7" medium "drop shot and jerkbait rod" - Super for jerkbaits Quantum KVD cranking rod 7"4' medium with anything between 5:1-6:1 reel on it for lipless. You still short a few. |
