Tackle retailers with pre-set rod n reel combos - Kassie - 01-21-2013 Morning all... I came across a rod n reel combo at a supermarket over the weekend that piqued my interest. A Shimano Crucial 6'6 medium power with an extra fast tip action. I believe its a previous generation Crucial. And a Shimano Caenan 100 size baitcaster. For R950. My question is - what would you primarily throw with this setup? Would anyone recommend this setup? I also found some very cheap combos from Quantum (I was not aware they were into discount stock) - they had Metrix and Ultrex rod n reel combos for less than R500. - Josvanheerden - 01-21-2013 suppose you could throw just about anything with that setup but would probably use it for a texas rigged plastics or even spinnerbaiting. that is really not a bad price for the combo as you would normally pay that much for just the reel. - Riprap - 01-21-2013 The new crucials are very nice, my son got one over the weekend, split grip, IM10 blank, etc. The older crucials are now selling for between R500 - R700 and a brand new Caenan before discount is R590 odd. This is a nice pairing except for the Caenan handle but it's easy enough to chuck off and fit another handle from a scrap reel. - Spikes - 01-21-2013 Hi Kassie,one of my friends has that same setup,only thing is that he fitted a Abu black max on the rod,his throwing his spinnerbaits and texas rig on it and its working perfect.If you are a weekend fisherman it would be perfect for you.Enjoy - ThinkBass - 01-21-2013 Combo sounds good. I've also spotted a few combo's at places like Sportsmans from time to time (Shimano Calisto baitcaster paired with similar 7" Shimano rod) for under R700 - I'm assuming it's 'older' stock, but for weekend anglers probably ideal?! - Riprap - 01-21-2013 ThinkBass - the calisto is a nice entry reel but if you use it often, it becomes quite "noisy" - do yourself a favour and listen to the advice on this site and buy the best you can afford! - Bassowitz - 01-21-2013 I've got a Crucial 6'8 and a Caenan 100 and it works perfectly. I have never had a problem with it and have been fishing with it for 3 years I used to have a calisto and after a while it just gave up on me and completely stopped functioning
