Culling Gadgets
Does anyone use any of the culling gadgets in competitions? Which ones do you use and why? I need a system for the Inanda Classic? after the last CFC and the 20 minutes of culling, fish jumping and bass thumb I realise there has to be a system. I have bought a Bass Pro Shops system with the little coloured balls on the plastic coated chain thingy? does it hassle the fish?

robf i bought the same system but have not used it, it looks like the best system to use.

Rob, I use a similar system in every tournament I fish. Coupled with a digital scale, it's the most accurate way to go. The only mod I've made is to remove the little chains, and replace them with heavy sea fishing line (more like thin nylon rope!) as the little chains are quite fragile when you've got a number of fish tangling them in the live-well. I generally tag my fish when I catch them, then weigh them all once I've got a limit, so I know what I'm culling.

Thanks guys? and for the tip on the thick line? It seems I?m on the right track. I was looking at the scale thingy that you stick two fish on simultaneously and then cull the lower one? but a tagging system and a digital scale seems the way to go.

Rob I use the BassPro one as well, the trick is that you need to weigh the fish and record it's size straight away. That way when you get a bigger fish you know that the pink ball gets turfed and you also don't spend 5 minutes chasing the fish around the live well.
I used the system the whole year and I have not seen any ill effects on the fish.
Norman Lures makes a really nice one but it costs about R100 more than the BassPro one and it does the same thing. But it will last longer my BassPro one has already started loosing the balls (must be all those big fish :lol: )

Not sure about in CT but in Durbs The Complete Angler gets them from time to time. Does Bass World in CT not have them? Maybe it?s time for you to order a batch of goodies from Bass Pro shops in the US? getting a parcel from them it like Xmas and Easter all rolled into one! Actually I think I will go there now and order some exotic goodies we can never get here!

Shannon, here is something I've thought about often....
The culling mechanism that Rob mentioned where you weigh one fish against another has me a little confused. You see the chaps on the pro tour use them and sometimes the fish are almost identical weights.
It's a known fact that fish lose weight in a livewell due to stress and other factors. If you have had a fish in the livewell for 2 hours, and you get one that weighs 20 or 30 grammes more than it, then considering the weight loss issue, which one do you cull?
Guys have often finished second by one or two ounces and I've thought about this culling issue with regards to that.
Guys, who's got some input or opinions on this? Do you toss the fish that weighs a tiny bit more, or keep the one you've had, knowing that it's not likely to lose any more weight?

Now that?s a very good point Drew?arama? oh well I will have to make another visit to the tackle shop and get me one of those fish scales as well. Mind you I suppose I could actually weigh the two similar fish on my digital scale and save the money for the new scale thingy! But it?s a point to remember and I will have the scale ready for just such a case!

Rob, I actually carry a balance beam as well, in case my scale bombs out. If you're fishing a money comp where bag is the big prize, each single gram counts. If you're fishing divisionals (like myself), in Natal, points are allocated per fish and per kg, so if you're 20g out, it's only 0.020 of a point. For me, it's not worth the time stuffing around not fishing to worry about 0.020 of a point. Hopefully I never have to eat my words!

Thanks Terminator? that?s a good enough excuse for me to visit the tackle shop now? this is an expensive hobby? especially if you are a little obsessive and compulsive like I am. I just have to win the next UK lotto so I can get a bigger boat to hold all this equipement?

How long did your stuff take to come from Cabelas PDV? Mine took 3 months and my order from BassPro Shops only took 3 weeks!
