Stripped plastic thread and self tapping screws

Evening guys.

Doing some repairs on my old trolling motor, Motorguide. From having numerous rack cable replacements and other over the last 10 years or so, the plastic into which the self tapping screws go to hold the rack in place with the pinion gear in the head of the motor are too stripped to keep it secure without cable play when you "nyatela" the pedal in the wind.

Bigger screws are not an option. Guess I will have to fill the plastic and redrill. What should I use? Alumilite plastic resin or an epoxy or what. Any advise appreciated. Thanks.

Go to your local hobby shop and get some slow setting cynon ( thats super glue btw)
Pop some baking powerder into the cavity, add a dollop of CA ( cynon... )
Add a touch of mineral oil to the screw tip
Screw in screw and let it all dry

Caution: if you get it wrong, assume the screws will be permanently set

Oh... And watch out for sticking everything else together, CA is not to be taken lightly

In that case I may as well use loctite?? How do I replace the rack cable or do other work down the line?

You can use a fibreglass polyester putty ( 2 part mix with a hardener ) Will also do the trick....

Hence the dab of mineral oil on the screw before you pop it into the glue/baking soda mix.

Get it wrong and its permanent

Or you could just buy a new trolling motor...

A Berg wind from the Cape phoned me and told me about Q-Bond which works wonders in a two part mix to fill and redrill those holes.
I couldn't access Q-Bond locally but got G-Bond (GlueDevil) which is the same thing I was promised and all is good as new again. Marvelous stuff. :eusa_dance:
