The questions I have below are purely from an ignorance point of view on my part.

1. I thought the problem with livebait was the bass swallowing it and getting damaged, I agree this is not cool, but strolling a crank does not do this to our bass. So why is it so taboo in the bassing faternity in SA? It is widely accepted in first world countries such as the States, Europe and Australia. Just not in the multi million dollar classics for obvious reasons.

2. If it is not challenging, then why is slowly trolling a plastic/spinner etc. accepted then?

Fishton, I wasn't having a go at you. What I stated was my opinion on the challenge of the technique. Whether a technique is accepted or not doen't change my opinion of it. To me, there is little challenge in dragging a carolina rig around - which as you stated - is accepted. To me, bass fishing is about the challenge.

I don't think I'll ever get a straight answer on this subject. :-( Untill that day I'll just keep doing what I love most ... fishing. Be it casting , trolling, strolling, whatever. Practice Catch & Release! Protect our species!

Fishton, you hit the nail on the head - you've got to enjoy what you are doing. That's what we've got to pass on to our kids. And most importantly, the policy of catch and release.

I have been wanting to take my kid fishing but the fishing is to slow at the moment . I cant wait for spring he is going to love it . On the live bait issue I think worms are ok esspecially if there are alot of tilapia around it will give the kid gauranteed action!!

Guys, this topic is rediculas ...I used to be hugh into the flyfishing thing and got so sick of it and hardly ever do it cause of politics..(career in that field over 4 years)

Purest theories can spoil a good sport guys..

The view from new potential flyfisherman was so negative because of politics, the sport died off dramatically. Trust me many shops closed over the last few years and I recon this kind of thing had a huge part to play.. (read the complete flyfisherman one day is just articles of guys flexing there muscles... ITS GAY!!!)

Keep it simple and have fun, while been respectful to you quarry..

Jacostry right now I think your 5 year old couldn't give a continental about what should be done, he wants to have fun.
I would suggest you try a few different things with him until you find one that he has more fun with. Kids of his age battle to cast properly and also to work a lure properly and therefore have limited success with artificials.
My suggestion would be to let him throw an earthworm or small baitfish on a float, that way he can see the action of the float bouncing up and down and he doesn't have to make a hundred casts to get some action. The float will also eliminate most swallowed baits
If he wants to try what Dad is doing, tie on a weightless or split shot Junior fluke, they catch lots of small fish and at the same time he will learn about working a lure.
Another thing you can try is to use Berkley Gulp earthworms (small bottle not packet), use them on a float, that way you are doing the same thing but with artificials. I've tested these worms on Tilapia in my Koi pond and they love them.

I remember when I was a kid, I could spend hours catching small Tilapia and had a ball doing it as long as the fish were bitting. Size meant nothing at that stage.
If you push the artificial lure story too much you could kill his interest in fishing before it gets started, he'll have plenty time to learn about artificials latter.
