Newbie bait and tackle

Hey Guys,

I recently acquired 2 Daiwa Power Mesh 5'6'' rods, 2 Daiwa BW 2 baitcasters, 2 Shimano Convergence 7' rods, 1oz and 3oz, with 2 Shimano Corsair CS 400 A Baitcasters.

I am new to Bass Fishing and would like to get a few pointers on how to spend money on my first few baits, hooks and rigs for my tackle box. I don't want to spend money on Cranks, Spinners or Softbaits which is reserved for the expert fisherman.

It is not about spending a lot of money, but I would like to get the (relatively) easy stuff under the belt before moving on to more complex rigs and tackle.

Howsit Guys

As a beginner i would say that your focus should be on plastics/soft baits. These are the Level 1 of bass fishing. There are so many variations and colours out there that one can get easily confused. If i was in your shoes i would focus on buying the following:

1. Gary Yamamoto's Senkos 4inch (Colours: Watermelon, Pumpkin Seed)
2. Zoom Jnr Fluke (Colours: June Bug, Watermelon & Pumpkin Seed)
3. Sinkers
4. Gamakatsu Skip Gap Worm Hook (Size to match plastics)
5. Small spool of Fluoruocarbon line as a leader
6. Colorado Blade Spinner (White, Chartreuse)

This should be more than sufficient. Later you can progress to but some twitch baits, crank baits etc. I find that you can pick up a lot of deals on forums where guys sell their stuff.

Just a question. I am planning to use a 100% Nylon Co-Polymer 10lb, 0.25mm line on all my reels, and a bright yellow Hi-Visibility extra strong 18lb, 0.36mm Coy-Polymer leader line(which I normally use on my Spincaster Reels).

Will this be good enough?

Hi Martin

First of all what part of the country are you residing?

I can only give advice on colours if I know what dams you will be fishing?

But I can point you in the right direction:

Senkos 4" and 5 ": here I only fish one brand Gary Yamamoto, colours: Amber Laminate, Green Pumpkin Blue Flake, Green Pumpkin Candy, Watermelon Red Flake and June Bug.

Strech 40: made by Gary Yamamoto and flat out catches fish in Green Pumpkin Candy, Watermelon red flake and Junebug.

Flukes: two brands I can recommend Gary Yamamoto D Shad and Big Bite Baits Triple Tail colours: Amber Laminate, Green Pumpkin Candy, Watermelon Red Flake, Tilapia and Junebug

Creature Baits: Get your hands on some Big Bite Baits Fighting Frogs and Xcite Baits Raptor Craws, colours Candy Grass, Tilapia, Watermelon Red Flake, and June Bug

You will need 2/0,3/0 and 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hooks

You will need Bullet sinkers Tungsten works best for me in 1/16, 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 oz

You will need some mojo sinkers

And either a Mojo tool its old school but still prefer it in clearer water to hold your mojo sinker in place or gummies these are rubber stopper that slide onto your line to keep your weight in place.

This should get you started they are all decent brands with proven fish catching ability.

Great Post. Know the basics and have confidence in the lures you are fishing and you will succeed.

That should be fine, but i would suggest using a fluorocarbon leader if possible. Its not a must but it would improve the presentation. Sounds like you all set to go. :eusa_dance:
