Spearfishing for bass

So, went to Roodeplaat dam yesterday and met a guy who spearfishes for bass and carp. I almost fell on my back when I heard what they do! He shot 2 HUGE carp, no bass. But he said they usually shoot about 30-40 bass in an afternoon session. And he goes there every wednesday and friday! He said he has permits to shoot these alien species.

Anyways, he showed us some pictures. Shot a 4,2kg bass last week (and 35 more!) and that's not his record. Also showed us a pic of a 6,5kg bass he shot in Harties.

I just think it's shocking to go and kill spawning fish! They are easy targets, especially because Roodeplaat's water is very clear at this time of the year. I wanted to shove his speargun where it matters and pull the trigger!!

What do you guys think?

Well that is just too terrible for words... there have been a few of them that tried that at Inanda and were lucky to have gotten out of the dam alive.

I checked some guy at rusties doing it once! I’m not scared to get into a confrontation with such a prick! In general I feel that spear fishing is wrong and I’m not scared to show my feeling towards it!!

Pershond... please do the following when / if you see the chap again.

Ask to see the permit he has to spearfish there, and who issued it. As far as I know, bow hunting permits have been issued, but spearfishing in fresh water is still illegal. Tell him to get a set of balls, go and fight the ocean currents and shoot some real fish and stop dicking around in fresh water like a woosie targeting easy fish :blue-evil: :blue-evil:

I used to spear fish in saltwater, and contrary to popular belief, to shoot a decent fish is not a matter of simply swimming down and picking a target and letting rip. You watch HUNDREDS of fish swim by, and when you see a decent fish you want to have a go at, you have to get down without spooking the thing, and then position yourself for a decent shot. Shooting carp and bass in shallow water is simply nothing to be proud of :blue-evil: :blue-evil:

I also used to do allot of saltwater spearfishing and its not easy you are lucky to shoot one decent fish every 5 times you go.

Why dont you tell him the spearfishing at RDW is cooking at the moment and maybe the crocs will sort him out !!!

WHAT A C !!!!!!!!!!!!! I can belive that they are doing that, I spoke to a guy here by the name of Dave and he spear fish at Inanda I told him that if saw him going that I would drive my boat over his head. He then said he has not done it for the last 6 years. SURE!!!!!
