Outing Costs

Has anybody considered what it actually costs you to go fishing!! :blue-rolleyes: This is apart from the cost of your boat,trailer,trolling motor rods and accessories!!! :blue-cool: I'm talking about a plain days outing with you and your partner on the dam!!!... Simply put, for the day, petrol for the bakkie,a Nissan 2.4,usage is approx 40ltrs to Quaggas and back,(Cape Town - Worcester +/- 125km one way) +/-25ltrs petrol for the boat, entry fee's, toll fee's and we wont worry about your food and drinks!! Some odds and sod's I may have missed, but it's a staggering total of +/- R 842.40.!!!!! :blue-redface: :blue-shock: :blue-redface: That if it's done properly, its roughly costing you and your partner about R421.20 each before you get on the water!!! :blue-confused: The above naturally excludes any wear and tear and the above is for petrol but i'm sure diesel is not that far behind!!! Now some bright arse is going to say BUT if you divide this and multiply that, you should get to something cheaper in cost!!!!.... BUT the point is, it's starting to get f#$king expensive for some people to fiss!!!!!
Anyway, its food for thought AND i will still go fissing whenever I feel like it!!!! :blue-cool:

Bergie, I have a sponsored boat and petrol and it still costs a friggen are and a leg.

Bergie I'm so glad a CT chap put this post up. Now seriously consider why we have been griping in KZN. This is a darn expensive sport, and add a nights camping, plus R180 each to fish an event !!! We spend huge loot. Add two packets of Yamamoto baits and a crank or two to the equation and you're looking at some large numbers for a comp.
Pre-fishing is done at a specific venue, so say you do two pre-fish outings. That's R2K between you and your partner and another R1000 for the comp day :blue-shock: Then it goes pear and it's lots of money that could have been spent at another venue, or something completely outside of fishing.

Sean, I feel your pain dude... just watch the petrol price. In a few months it might be cheaper to find a boat partner and pay for a divorce :blue-shock:

Great replys guy's, Drew I purposly left off the camping, lures and overnight stays and comp fee's etc,cos her inside was hovering over my shoulder (wish she would sod off back to work) and I wanted to try and not blow it out of the water. But YES!!.. let us not forget the frills and fancy's cos if her inside found out the total cost of my gear and whats parked in the garage and my "days" fissing cost she would have a field day in the shops on my credit card!! Oooooh I need a drink!!! :blue-badgrin: :blue-biggrin: Just the thought!!! :blue-biggrin: :blue-lol:

That is very scary and the worst is it won't ever get any better! Thank goodness Bergie sees my friendship as payment enough! Oh and I don't charge him for fishing lessons either! lol. :blue-razz:

Seriously though, it is very sad that our sport is so expensive. The lure prices are also getting out of hand. Yamamoto plastics are over R60 a pack and the others around R40 a pack! (Plastics that is)

I have also started using stuff that I never throw just to get rid of some of it and not spend more money unnecessarily, sadly one day I will need to start replacing things.... :blue-cry:

One thing that is still cheap is membership to BFSA!!! WOOOHOOO!!! :blue-biggrin:

Now this is a very silly post… just over a year ago we did an exercise and costed out the cost per fish including everything and if I’m not mistaken it was something like R650 a fish… if I did that costing now it would be a little more… the boat and rods and reels are way more expensive now, petrol is way more and we are catching less fish. I for one will stick my head in the sand for this exercise and forget that Bergie ever posted this silly posting! Oh and if you think Yamamoto baits are only R60 a packet then you haven’t seen the new pricing yet!

Tolla... please take this from where it comes bud, but here follows a mail I sent to a few mates who ranted and raved in the UK about crime in SA and then wanted us all to feel sorry for them as they had ridiculous housing costs and petrol prices over there. They CHOSE to leave, and can still afford 2 annual 4 to 5 star holidays. I couldn't care if diesel cost you 3 pounds a litre. You still got a Ranger though? Read this and seriously think about what I'm saying. I just put the first 3rd in, the rest you probably wouldn't apprecite one bit. The point here is not to get offended, but really think about what it is that you want.

I find it quite satisfying, from time to time, to do some reflecting on the downfalls of our rapidly decaying society.
Political influences and differences of opinion are apparent in every nation, so that in itself is certainly not the major issue
within South Africa. Having said that though, I have no doubt that political indifferences have caused many a South African
to be a victim of crime, often a violent crime.

In my most humble, and often completely naive opinion, the root cause of most of South Africa's crime is indeed poverty,
as well as a lack of government funds. Fat cats sit in powerful positions and earn top dollar, but that is insignificant compared
to the known, and heaven help us if we unearth the unknown figures of corruption and fraud. So what can we as South African's do?
Well, not much I suppose, except carry on trying to climb the corporate ladder and build businesses within South Africa.
We live and work here, and we work hard. We pay taxes and distribute our monthly salaries amongst local communities and
businesses, and ever so often we may make a purchase via the internet purely because it is cheaper. There is tax involved
in importing goods and while the government benefits from that, the local businessman who sells the same product here will
suffer in the end. I am also aware of the fact that some members of our society choose crime purely because they make more
money that way as opposed to working in the unskilled labour market. Crime however is not endemic to South Africa and I do
wholeheartedly believe that employment and education is key to a safer and more productive SA.

The internet purchase scenario is a very small example of how our desire, and more often than not, need to save money effects
the local economy and business. Those purchases however, will not lead to a situation such as Zimbabwe. So where am I going
with this, and what is my point exactly?. Well, to be blatantly honest, I'm sick and tired of receiving emails from ex South Africans trying
to help the humanitarian cause in South Africa when they probably wouldn't recognise their home towns if they had the ability to teleport
themselves there. Signing electronic and website petitions will do very little to help the situation here. In the field of engineering, South Africa
has bred some highly capable and world class people. In other fields, the situation is much the same. It is these said individuals who choose
where to practice the skills they have learnt here. Some stay and through hard work and many sacrifices, they build multi million rand
companies that employ hundreds of people. These companies are either an export or import concern, others deal solely within the
local economy and there are those that partake in all of the disciplines of import, export and local distribution of goods. If one of these
people come to me and wailed about their situation in South Africa I will gladly lend an ear. The expats however, completely annoy me
with their email petitions and websites promoting a safer and more successful South Africa. They chose to leave this country and in
doing so, helped strengthen the economy within their country of choice. If they really want to make a difference, then work, live and spend
in South Africa. Don't rape international opportunities then invest in South African property for personal gain which helps escalate property
prices and ultimately hurt the young couples so desperately trying to establish a family and life in South Africa.

I have never heard anyone leave South Africa on the grounds that the Drakensberg in not spectacular enough, the game reserves are
not appealing for a quiet getaway, that the wine farms in the Cape are substandard and I doubt I will ever hear anyone say that Knysna
is a dump. We won't elaborate on what this country has to offer. The point remains that while people who left our borders are excercising
good will in trying to help the situation here, their efforts are futile and if they really wanted to make a difference, they would return and
relocate their businesses or expertise within our borders and grow our economy. Once you have done that and then decide to leave, well
at least you have tried and done your bit. It has been over 12 years since I left school and I have given it my all here. I am by no means
highly educated but I do know that hard work, perseverance and a willing desire to succeed in South Africa will benefit my countrymen.
So please refrain from sending me your 5 page pathetic "let's all feel sorry for our home country" documents and petitions that will in all
reality do nothing for the country, except waste 10 minutes of my valuable working time that I use right here in South Africa to strengthen OUR
economy.
