would you mind sharing your secret to success...we fished a comp a couple years ago which you also fished and i watched you fishing for a period of time and noticed you had a similar style to julian...rod tip up hand in the pocket.

do you find slow fishing works to keep you consistant...or do you run and gun when the time is right.

with all the years of experience what advice would you give someone who is starting comp. fishing and wants to be in the top 10...do you think being able to adapt to the conditions as required... ie fishing the moment...changing from a crankbait to a drop shot is the key...or do youy think it is better to get to know the dam and practice on a particular dam before the comp. find spots and target them all day using the same style ie a mojo rig.

you must be doing something right because your name seems to come up all the time...and a lot of the time it has something to do with collecting a prize.

Well Cranky.

It's quite a simple process. Some times i pump her hard and fast and some times i fondle her slow and steady. That all depends what kind of mood she's in. The LAKE that is.

I have all types of rods rigged when i get to the lake. I will normally go about the day giving surface, cranks, spinnerbaits a go. If a fish bites one of these baits i may give it a few more minutes. Most of the time i always end up with a rod rigged with a plastic bait of some sort in my hand.

In a way i suppose i am a very lazy angler. For example if i have to wear myself out throwing a crank all day the fish sure better be eating it on every 2nd cast. I don't see the point of beating myself up for 5 bites on the crank if i could do the same job with a plastic bait.

The beauty of a plastic bait is that fish will eat it all day. Should you find the correct area that is. As for the hand in the pocket and rod high is a style that normally gets a bite during those really tough hours.

And yes. It is the key to being consistant. I have had my butt spanked a few times by the crank/spinnerbait boys. But i don't beat myself up about that. The records speak for themselves. :blue-cool:

And Mr Refereeeeeeeee... as they say in the classics I rest my case! Plastics rule and cranks suck! Well unless of course I get a sponsor for cranks or spinner baits! :blue-biggrin:

But seriously... that is really good advice from someone who has walked the talk! Thanks Justy! That advice certainly makes me feel better and that I have my plan for this year and I’m not far off the beaten path to getting it right.

Now I just need to hire a truck and build a whole lot of brush piles... oh sheeezzz did I bring this issue up again! :blue-mad:

I've seen the Americans also stand with the rod straight up, finger on the line. Does it make the rod more sensitive? And don't you have trouble in the wind?

Jokes aside, when fishing plastic's I always stand with my rod tip in the air..or up..which ever way you want to look at it with finger under the fluocarbon and allow a slow presentation most of the time!!!....

It's amazing how one feel's that 'tic..tic' on the line!!

And yes, cranks rule rob..you just getting to old bud!!!!!....What's that I hear...you don't do manual labour!!!!!... :blue-badgrin: :blue-lol:

Thanks for sharing Justy, and I would assume much of your success is rather based on finding the fish based on conditions, including water, weather, dam etc. I would love to know how you determine this?

Is it based on years of experience, scientific knowledge of bass behavior, current local knowledge or a combination of all three? Surely lady luck also plays a part?

To all the crank haters,he did not say they did not work,he just said its harder work.Cranks and spinnerbait is an integral part of a bassfishermans arsenal.Jip,and they do work,and when they are on the day nothing can keep up.As for the finger on the line,I didnt know there is any other way.Its a must..

So let me get this straight, you guys ALWAYS have you finger on the line when fishing plastics??

And ya, i must say that every bait has its slot. From spinnerbaits, topwaters, and cranks to ANY plastic... they ALL work at different times.
When a spinnerbait isnt working, a topwater might, IF a crank isnt working, a plastic bait will etc....

You can fish a plastic for hours and not get a bite, throw a crank and BAMM!! fish on. REaction strike. So you CANT say that this or that doesnt work. i mean F*& it, they caught a bass on a batman figurine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FACT!!!!

I dont have a PROPER go to bait yet. Its a problem because i love ALL the applications and baits so its gonna take forever for me to find my favourite or go to bait.

The last day of the ESA final at Goedetrouw you were running and gunning all over the place. Being out there taking photos made it a lot easier for me to take notice of what each boat was doing as I wasn't focused on fishing.
I thought you may be running points. In all honesty, I have never seen anyone run and gun so much. What was your strategy on the last day, and what pattern were you fishing? I ask as I'm very interested to hear your approach.

Oh, and sorry for being in the middle of nowhere while you were heading up the river :blue-redface:

Well Drew it kinda go's like this.

Being a newbie to the great lake of Phoobum or what ever the hell its now called. One has to remember that we do not have the advantage of having spots that one can sit on and grind out 14kgs of bass every day like some other chops i know. :blue-sad:

So we had to cover as much water as possible. However we still used the slow and steady worming method. The bait that worked the best for us was a Kalins grub (pumpkin) rigged with a 1/16 tungsten weight and a 2' mustad mega lite hook. 8lb gamma line. We really had to soak the bait for long periods to get the bite.

Main lake points did play a part in our pattern.
