Boating etiquette

I have a query that i'm sure you guys will answer. I know the casting distance rule. But if i see someone fishing a particular piece of structure such as "the stumps" or the "quarry" at kwaggas for eg i rather not go near them because they probably working the area. It's just courtesy.

I was fishing the stumps on Sat, i had got to the end of the row and was working my way back down the row towards the shallows when a guy pulled in barely within casting distance and started working the stumps. I was basically stuck.

I could understand if it was a bay or something but this was a particular piece of structure. not sure if im explaining this correclty :blue-redface:

I'm not upset about it just found it a bit irritating as i was having success at the stumps.

So was it cool for him to do this, should he have asked me, or should he have just stayed away.

Its directed more at non comp fishing. Ive never fished a comp before. but input on both options would be cool. I suspect that if this was a comp words would have been exchanged :blue-biggrin:

We were filming an episode for ESA at Inanda on Saturday and working a bank from the Water Board to the dam wall and all of a sudden this piece of crap in a speedboat and no sneaker motor with three fisherman aboard came screaming into the bay and stopped right in front of us (in the direction we were fishing) and started casting... and then switching their motor on to move away from the bank because of the wind... :blue-sad:

We didn’t want to cause a scene in our ESA get up so we simply up and left... but I’m still seething... they are nothing but damn inconsiderate pigs! I doubt very much they fish compos because they would have been DQ’ed there and then.

Fishing etiquette simply boils down to being considerate and well mannered... something that often goes out the window in some compos... the Two Man challenge we had similar issues. :blue-sad:

Fishing etiquette should be around at all times weather social or at comps ...it just makes for better living...

However, saying that, there are arseholes out there that don't give a furk and because you are on a spot they seem to think that, well he must be doing well let push in......some of our so called "professionals' are very guilty of just such and action... but you do the same to them boet they 'cry wolf' VERY quickly. Some guys although they know the rules are just plain ignorant! :blue-rolleyes:

Next time cast out a marker buoy half way down and see what happens...or failing that cast an 8oz lead shot at the skipper...might work!!! :blue-biggrin:

What kills me is when you draw a number at a comp only to find some oke parked in your space prior to start. This happened to us at the last BETT where boat number 55 was parked between 50 and 52. Upon politely requesting the old dude to move, I was told that someone was in his spot and tough takkie for me. Having my son on board, and desperately resisting the urge to head butt the porker, I opted to let it be.

Unsurprisingly, he was happy to be pushed off as boat 51 instead of 55 and not waiting his turn.

I observe the same thing at launch ramps where some okes are just too important to wait their turn or heed to lesser mortals.

I think this type of behavior is indicative of our society of late. Where has honour, good manners, ethics and humility gone?

On a social side, etiquette is just using common sense and respect for other anglers and water users. Pulling infront of someone when they fishing is really not a polite thing to do. If it is blatant, then there is no excuse, if you are 150m away, well then it's debatable. On a competition note, If a person comes to within casting distance of an area that you are clearly fishing, one must cast towards the boat, and tell the person that they are coming into casting distance, and if they would mind moving further away. This should be done in a way not cause a fight, but just to make the person aware that they are interfering with you fishing. If the person does not back away, you are entitled to lodge a complaint at the end of the day along with R50, or what ever it may be. The person would then b DQed from the day or the tournament. The most important thing is to have notified the other person that they are entering your casting distance. If you have not, you cannot lodge a complaint. Hope this helps. Keep well

i think most people are polite and considerate...there are always the exception...i think the key is communication...then there is the paint ball gun with a 20 lb canister :blue-biggrin:

i have a problem with the casting distance nowadays i can throw a dd22 almost a 100 metres using a 7.9 rod (which i had modified to make sure thay are less than 8 ft due to the rule of max 8 ft in the USA just in case) with a callcutta dc...there would be no place for anyone to fish :blue-badgrin:

I treat Social and compos the same. I keep my distance, unless I know the person and know that he wont mind when I cruise in for a chat. Will still not sommer fish there. In comps I keep my distance, friend or enemy :blue-biggrin:

Maybe next time politely introduce yourself and get the wankers name so we can name and shame him. It is important however to make him aware he has encroached in your casting area usually around 30m or so. If this doesn't help what I normally do is ask the chap if he can read the sign - the sign that says F@ck off from my spot - don't be afraid bru, you paid the same money as him to fish there.Respect
