Lead Weighted Lure Release Device

Hi fellow bassers. As a newby I'am at it again, kindly could you give me more info on something I call a "lead weighted lure release divice" I was told by a good bass fisherman, Skalk Gordon my son's teacher, that you get something that releases your lure if it's stuck on a tree or stump. I lost an expensive crank on the weekend, I was right over it but pulled so hard that eventualy untill the 12lb Big Game snapped.

Apparently it is a lead device that you hook aroud you line and then drop it down. When it hits your lure it loosens it. If it does not come loose you lift it up on the rope and drop it again.

Is this something one can buy of the shelf or is it a home made device?

Norkie you can make a very simple one. Take a 3 - 5oz sinker put a paper clip through where the line should be tied. Now simply clip it onto your line when you are basically ontop of the lure then just let go and let the sinker fall onto the lure, this normally knocks the lure free. Ps tie a piece of line to the sinker so you dont loose sinker and lure if it doesnt work.

Alternatively you can buy one from the shops which are much heavier, they are known as bulldogs. They fall onto the lure, knock it free or attach themselves to the lure. They have some thin rope so if it doesnt knock it free you can pull it free, you may break a tripple hook but at least you still have your favourite lure.

Hi Norkie.

Yip, this devise is simply known as a lure retriever. It consists of a large piece of lead to weight it. Onto this is a ring device that you thread your line through, but the gap is about 1cm so it's not like you have to squeeze your line through and damage it. That mentioned ring is on the top of the retriever. On the bottom of it, there are a few chains that hang loosely from it. They resemble something like the very old plug chains before they became the bead type. You keep a firm line when you get snagged. Thread the lure retriever down your line and it will knock your lure free. If it doesn't come off, you jiggle the lure retriever up and down. The chains will then get snagged on the trebles. With the thick cord that is attached to the lure retriever, you just yank it out. Either the structure will give way, or the trebles will bend and you get your lure back. They sell off the shelf for under R70-00 which pays itself if you only save 2 lures with it. The Complete Angler has in stock.

I'm sure if you get one you will do more cranking in the right places because you won't be scared of loosing lures.

Yeah, if you call 280km close by then count me in !!!
I work in Richards Bay and travel to Durban on weekends for a reality check. You know, just to see that life exists outside of this place I affectionately call Sphincterville !!! OH, and also to catch monster bass at Inanda and Alberts of course. Tongue

And I thought us Gautengers had a long trip to RDW and Witbank. 280km every weekend gee that must be taxing.

Hi Drew, thanks for that. Yes you right I was scared to crank between stumps especialy on that spot where you saw me from the balcony. When I finaly did it was great fun until I got stuck. I took out a new crank but did'nt want to crank between the stumps again, bur now I will :lol:

Pomerob...... you don't understand how bad this place is. I mean I'm 40 mins from Goedetrouw where I can catch 2,5kg fish all day. The problem is that would mean I have to spend a weekend evening and a day here..... eisshhh, don't even want to think about it.... right there's some hijacking taking place here....

Norkie, that is a good spot for cranking. Fish will normally rush out of trees to nail a crank. Yes, you do get stuck from time to time, but the retriever will do wonders. Just one thing, a soft cranking stick helps let fish get his mouth over the crank before he feels resistance. It also helps when cranking over structure because it will give way a bit before the hooks get imbedded. With a stiff rod and a steady cranking speed, the chances are that as soon as your lure hits timber, it will get stuck. I'm not a cranking guru by any means, but do enjoy it and I'm sure if I'm wrong, Murdock will jump up and tell me I'm giving you k@k info.... it's just what I've found since buying a rod more suited to cranking.

Norkie I normally use the paper clip first, normally this is enough, only after it has failed I bring out the bull dog, normally the bull dog stays dry in its compartment.

I want to get a couple of hours of bream fishing Norkie. very relaxing after a hard days bass fishing. Throw anchor, pour a stiff one and watch that float. emmmmemmemmm, cant wait.

I think for fun I'll see if I can make one myself.... I've made a couple of home made lures.... why not try make a retriever!?!?!?!?

Norkie, the stiff drink he pours is tequilla, and he pickles the earthies in that b4 he uses them.... therefore no longer alive and legal..... and when he is ticking like a parrots poopall, he even has a little snack already in his drink...... lol......
