water quality will be always a factor in africa. the western cape is very lucky most dams still not effected by it. but this does not mean invasive.

lets take theewaters since the huge drought the western cape had a few years ago, the carp and catfish brought the bass population down to its knees.from a prime bass venue to one that been left out numerous times. just look at the mt held there last time.17/34 anglers and 7fish for the day.does this not ring a bell?

this dam was even stocked with 10 000 bass from eikenhoff which just prolonged the real problem.the way it should have happened is that a large number of catfish and carp should have been removed. the bag limit at fish per boat doesn't say any thing.the signs are there. this is not because of water quality.

about 50% of the mt takes place on kwaggas. wont it be nice to actually have 6 well manage waters to fish in the western cape? at the present there 3dams. 2 which are over 200km away. the 4th have taken such a knock. why would the biggest bass fishing fraternity manage waters? look after stock and the future of the stock.

we are to ignorant to help nature. as long as we got a fishing spot now we dont care. what if tomorrow comes and you have no bass left and all the gear and a boat? what will you do then?

the evidance is there.it does not help we blame other, its our sport and the future depends on us.

I am busy getting the pilot project off the ground. Before one can do it u need to know if profitable, sustainable and how big the market is..cape nature very happy but the res to deside is dwa and daff now.we will start with a 18month pilot project to see if all good and well. The success depends on a lot of factors..educating people will b the biggest.

Took my son fishing there last month, on a weekend
Some farm laborers were catching carp for the pot. Im pretty sure thats the extent of it

Heaviest fish R2,000

I am sure we could put this together and host it at Theewaters kloof and the profits we put into the next months comp at Kwaggas and then the next month at Voelvlei etc etc.

We take all these carp for a feeding project on the flats and bobs your uncle. I think we could pull it off no hastles.

I believe you're on the right track there! With all the fish going to feeding schemes I am sure a couple of charities will also contribute to the prize pot.

If this competition is held every second week or so, cleaning up different dams, it might even create a job for a guy cleaning and gutting those carps for the feeding schemes. :blue-biggrin:

This competition can even be extended to any dam at any place: Meaning entrants must just come and drop of the "bag", or "bakkie"..... don't know about you guys, but I'm not a carp fan... any carp out of any dam is progress.... :blue-badgrin:

I do not think we are on the right track with this topic. Imagine a Carp angler seeing this and then go and advertise on his website that they must have a Bass comp to take out the Bass where they fish. If you are not tolerant of other facets they will never be the same towards the Bass in our waters and the Hook and Cook brigade will grow bigger every year. I ask you nicely never to preach the removal of other species in or waters because we will just create more enemies to the Bass we love and we can not afford it in this country where we have so little Bass water.

Tolerance for others is probably right. Its just awesome to see how tolerant these carp anglers are to our species when you sit on boskop in spawn and you see big fish after big fish being walked to the back of the bakkie where the cooler box lies. But I gues rather turn the other cheak than an eye for an eye.t

nut this don't really work well because it creates fishing pressure. speak to urs swartz at voelvlei.they have all the stats of all their comps at voelvlei. the carp sizes has gone down because of over population.a carp is a specie that needs to be well manage. a female of 3kg can lay 500 000-1 000 000 eggs per spawn. the older female becomes sterile at later age.your med class carp is the biggest issue.

this should be seen as a management project. every one has the right to fish for their fish being it catfish, carp, yellow fish, bass or what ever.we should sit around the same table and share our catch stories.lol

hoping when dwa signs the permit off for voelvlei that the results will speak for it self.the data will later be available to the public once all relevant parties had time to analyse it. or if you visit me at the waters lol.

i have seen disturbing pics today of bass from clan being killed by locals.the bass was 1.5kg to 4kg. they where doing it for the table and with using plastics.

this was really sad because this is the future spawning females .

ye the locals use cheap fishing rods or hand lines wrapped around a can. they mostly use plastic worms and stuff since its the most affordable baits for them. uhh it breaks my heart when i see them catch those big fish and break their necks

We tour a lot and always have our bass gear. There are places that we camp with no bass in the lake, so we rig a bass rod with mealies or pap and relax while braaing.
When that reel runs we love the fight of a V6 carp , much better fight than any bass!

I must admit I do have a problem with barbel, but only in the western cape, as they never occurred there before.
All other regions they have been living with all other species, including bass ,pressure on bass by fisherman is the biggest culprit, imagine being caught, put in a shitty livewell, no temp control and released hours later.
No f#$%ng fundi will convince me that it is healthy for a species, whatever species.
Cut bag limits to 1 or 2 fish only and bass may survive.
Bassing is a passion.
We are destroying bass fishing, that includes me.
