Rotenone is highly toxic to fish: most values for the 96 hour LC50 (lethal concentration required to kill half the test organisms) for different fish species and for daphnids (water fleas) lie in the range of 0.02 to 0.2 mg/litre. If used as a piscicide, it may also cause a temporary decrease in numbers of other aquatic organisms(40).
There is considerable controversy over the use of rotenone to kill non-game fish in water body management areas. One study found that the practice has a substantially harmful effect on biodiversity, in which several populations of the native fish showed negligible signs of recovering stocks, while populations of all exotic species are up(41).

Surely there are better ways to get the bass out that section of river than the kill all the fish in it?
When the new dam wall is constructed would the weir be above or below the 100% level? If its below the new level wouldnt it be a better idea to try a different river?
Where are they getting the yellow and other indigenous fish from to stock this river again?
Wonder if they will try it in the Eerste River or the Lourens River to get of the trout...I have a strong feeling the answer is no.

Does anyone have feedback on the Rotenone issue which was scheduled for yesterday, please?
specifically: number/species of fish in total, alien vs indiginous species, mortality rate of both, effectiveness of the treatment, effect on tadpoles and frogs (although out of season), method of disposal of the dead.

What happened? Is the 600 dead bass referred to on this site from this project, etc etc??

It is sad,but there is no stopping this...there is a war on to eradicate the fish from certain river systems which we must accept...that river has no value to us as bass anglers,but has HUGE value to the restoration of some threatened indigenous species (I refer to the Rondegaat River in Clanwilliam here).It is just such a pity that this Department does not communicate comprehensively in order that all facets be informed so we could get more involved.Just hope the fish were given to hungry people and not dumped. :blue-sad:

yes, Jeremy, rotenone is a natural poison extracted from shrub roots, and is very quick acting and fast decaying and fish stunned/killed are safe to eat.
