Nice one Valrath, how is the water clarity, when i was there a few weeks back the visibility was about 20cm.

Its dirty in the upper parts of the river.
The river was flowing and there was a lot of debris and algae.

the point I'm trying to make with my 8000x6000 old eyes is: If the bass has a red eye, how do you refine from which sub-species it is?

I just said it has red eyes as it is getting ready to spawn.

Out of pure curiosity Valrath, I'm going to research the red eye syndrome a bit and revert.
I often hear this but have yet to see a red eye bass so please excuse my ignorance.

I wont be there this weekend but I was there on the 1st September (the day after the storm) with my girlfriend. Fishing was really tough but i got fish on a white jig, white crank and two different colour senkos but both had white in them...see the pattern there?
Some of the bass (largies and spotties) had 'red' eyes, i will put a few on the site tonight.

It would seem that bass with red eyes have been debated at length and worldwide. The only true Redeye Bass is Micropterus coosae, of which SA doesn’t have any.
Other than that, only smallies and spotties have been known to have red eyes at certain times. Some say it is gene specific within populations, others that their eyes do sometimes change to red during times of stress such as spawning. This is not a given though and there are schools of thought that water clarity, substrate and depth do also have an effect.

I don’t know but you decide – very interesting though.

Yeah also fished Mofam last weekend.

Finished off with a few OK fish, but fish definitely still not as active as usual. Fish really didn't put up Mofams usual fights. Think give them at least 10 - 14days worth of good weather. Largest just under 2kg. Fish were in top condition.

Lots and lots of debrit and green slime but the water was still relatively clear, but quite cold. Fish weren't super deep. Most between top of the water to about 2.5m.

Largest fish came from casting a golden deepdiver at a 8m deep dropoff, and then the bass slaughtering the lure as it hits the water - gotta love bass fishing.

Most fish caught on flukes, flicker shad and deep divers.

Action was relatively slow in the morning but picked up a lot towards 16:00.

Saw quite a few schools of newborn(?) tiny (1 - 1.5cm) bluegills. Lovely cannon fodder for the bass.

Still one of my favourite venues..
