Pre- Fishing - To use a hook or not?

There are exceptions to every rule, so ok, you may catch the same fish twice - sometimes. But if you're pre-fishing a tournament, why take a CHANCE on hurting the fish you've found. Chances are you'll regret it.

Sticking fish in practice will definately hurt your chances in a comp unless it is a week or two before.
I have 2 small bass in my Koi pond which I've abused several times (in the name of science) and trust me they are not eager to take that same bait for a day or two afterwards.
When you Pre-fish you are trying to figure out how to catch the fish not actually catch the fish.
I will cut the point off the hook and then still fold what's left of the point over even more to minimize hook-ups. On Crankbaits I will put surgical tubing over each point on the treble to minimize hook-ups.
But it is hard not to catch one or two just to check and make yourself feel better

I must admit before chatting to a secret sorce (bassa) i used to pre-fish by seeing how many fish I could catch in a spot, the more fish the better the spot. duuuuuurrrrrrr.......wrong.

I used to put it down to a change in conditions when I didnt catch anything in a spot that was firing a week and a half before, now i realise it was a crazy bass fisherman with an ego not to blank and to see how good a spot was by the amount of fish he could catch a week and a half before that sent them running for the hills (inverted hills :lol: ).

Now, in known spots, catch all the buggers you can and in your little, not so well known spots, investigate and leave them the F alone for the following week

I was speaking with a fisheries biologist and he informed me that depending on the level a fish's stress they do release a type of lactic acid and this could take some time to leave the body. He said that depending on how the fish was brought in that could impact on the stress. It is a good idea not to play a fish to the point of exhaustion, some fish may actually not survive the ordeal, especially with trout (bass are more tough).

Report from Drew is that the sudden temp drop has not been that good for fishing and things were pretty hard this morning? Drew and Warren left early because of the hard fishing but Drew is on his way back to the dam now? fishing is still looking good for the tour because Mr Lincoln will have a day or two to adjust to the new temperatures!
