Just heard some sad news Cry

2 of my club members were down at Inanda yesterday and came across 2 locals that were fishing off old paddle skis (you guys have probably seen them and been approached by them for hooks and line).

The one guy had a small crate on his ski, when our club members asked him to show and tell, he opened it up and to their horror he had 8 fish in the crate already gutted.

The worst part about it is the size of the fish - 1 over 5kg; 2 over 4kg; 2 over 3kg and one just over 2kg and 2 under 2kg
They are using live tilapia for bait and their tackle........? You guessed it, the hooks and line that anglers are giving to them just to get rid of them.

Please what ever you do, please do not give any of the locals any fishing tackle whatsoever.

These guys are quite proud of the fact that they are making R50 a fish, as soon as others hear about this there will be hundreds of them doing it.

Please help to protect our fish from these fools

That is sad news Shannon. The thing that really gets me is we have to pay entrance fees and hold a valid angling licence to practice catch and release, these guys don't need anything in that line and will never be asked for it either!

Yip I know the fellows you are talking about? they hang around Andre?s Point. When Fishton and I were there a few weeks back they had a big bass on board as well? gutted and dry? :-(

It really is sad? and WHO pays them R50 a fish?

They sure are lucky I didn't see that.They would have all gone for a swim.I will remember this for when we are down in July.I am going to take a katty with me and marbles or maybe even better some rubber snakes.

Surely they hide the paddle ski on their side of the shore as
I cant see them carrying it all the way home.
Someone just needs to see where and pull a Chuck Norris night or
early morning mission,take it back to the other side and dispose of it.
Without the ski im sure their chances of landing these fish will drop hugely.

this is sad :-( , i think they should petrol the waters and sieze all their stuff if they don't have a fishing licence, the people that run the show there should wake up, because if there is no fish or any decent ones they will loose out, money wise! :x

When we were there, we went right to the end of Durban Bay. It is quite populated and people were netting fish 8O 8O :evil:

I have also seen this practiced at witbank, some may think that someone has been kind enough to leave an anchor rope. More often than not it is an anchor to run a net. If you see rope, cut it.

These guys should be caught with a line and sinker and also be gutted....they will quickly feel what it is like to be gutted.

Yip, it is sad news, but the problem is that Shannon's advise with regards to not giving the locals tackle is the only way to slow this butchering. The locals have free reign and do not need permits to fish. The local chief is paid a royalty by Msinsi, or at least I know he was in the late nineties. Oh and Joe, if you take a cattie with you, just remember u r taking a cattie 2 a gun fight 8O u don't wanna piss them off. It's just not worth it. I would also like to know who pays R50 a fish... in about late November last year, there were 2 guys up in the river mouth fishing with live Tilapia the size of the average hand. They had a fish way over 7kgs and one over 6kgs in their posession.... makes u think about the swimbait issue that has been discussed at length lately. Wink

I dont think you will ever stop them killing big fish , we will have to accept it as part and parcel of living in SA . Remember you might feel safe on your boat with your catty but it is a long road out of inanda and I sure no wone wants to meet pissed off locals on the road out of there!!!!!!!
