I just had a look at the table of contents and found that there are 35 ways of fishing livebaits. This book is certainly not written for the S.A 'purist market'.

I was chatting to a guy on Friday that showed me some photos on his phone of some really big bass, +4kg's. Apparantly the locals are selling livebait to him (and who knows how many others). I didn't have a problem with the guy's fishing technique up untill he said "they didn't taste so good!" 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O

I have managed to convince him that under 1kg tastes great and are 'safe' to eat. But the big ones are k@k to eat and could possibly carry 'deseases'. Condemning the guy would just aggrivate the situation and result in a lot more fish dying. I will be having a chat with some of the local 'paddlers' (big bass killers) the next time on the water. I don't know why I haven't done this earlier, even if it takes time. The dreaded purist attitude we all know so well doesn't really help anything. I have been made to feel like a gay black muslim that plays Microsoft Flight Simulator and who's hands glow in the dark after a day at work, and I release my fish! So lets look at educating the non-educated local, week-end fisherman etc. etc.

They mention that at most lakes in the states you can buy live bait at the ramp or local bait shop and include night crawlers, salamanders, leeches, shad and minnows. There is also an intresting section on back trolling

What is back trollong? Sounds interesting.

By thier explination "back trolling" is basically drop shotting small live bait with a sinker on the bottom and you troll ridges and other long running structure at a very slow speed. This is normally done in reverse as the resistance from the transom gives you the slowest speed possiable.

they do state that it is illegal to fish with live bait if you are using other game fish, i.e. small bass fingerlings. :-?

And is SA it is illegal to use any live bait whatsoever, except for KZN, but that is changing apparantly. My biggest bass on a livebait is 1.6kg, so I don't really care. But I wonder how that law would apply to the locals, or is the law only for those who can afford it?????

Lets face it, although there may be some laws and guidelines set down on paper somewhere, currently I do not know of any water that is policed. basically anything goes. As many fish as you like, when you like, by whatever means you like and where you like. Frustrating but true :-(

My mate was telling me that there is a fair amount of policing at St Lucia Estuary? but they really only police Shad? and the last 12 years of shad protection has paid off and it?s not the shad that need protecting these days? it?s the Grunter and Pompano and all the other species the dick heads are ripping out of the estuary! :-(
