Fishing Tips

I learned some valuable lessons on Saturday which may be common sense to the experts but I thought I would share them with the other newbie?s like me? while I caught a new personal best tally of 17 fish I could have brought in way over 20 if I had listened to my mate giving me advice in the past? but I guess you have to learn from your own mistakes for it to sink in.

Tip number one? stay alert and don?t let your line go slack and leave yourself open to not striking properly? it happened to me a few times on Saturday and the result was the fish had time to dislodge the hook and swim away. Keep the line tight at all time and reel in any slack to keep maximum tension for striking.

Tip number two and the most important for me is when you have struck the fish and are reeling him in stick your rod tip into the water, as far as you can if you have to but don?t let the sucker get to the top so he can jump (and yes it looks awesome) but I lost 3 beauties that way as well? it seems the bigger fish are more adept at this than the small ones.

Tip number three is having your net on the boat ready and don?t wait until you hook a big one before screaming for your buddy to get the net out the hatch.

Tip number four is have your favourite baits and rods ready in case you should lose your tackle to a tree or rock because those 5 minutes spent putting new tackle when you suddenly hit a hot spot can cause pain and anguish.

For the spinnerbait guys out there, if you having problems with the skirt being pulled off just take a very small cable tie and strap it over the rubber band ! Works like a charm!

I fishing with a mojo rig the whole day and started with a 4? Yumdinger Pumpkin? and I switched to (never before tried) Gary Yamamoto Creature Bait also pumpkin and that when all hell broke loose! I use a 3.0 hook. It is the most fun I have had with my clothes on!

Hi Pomerob? Yes I know what you mean about the burner? the little ones end up bare foot skiing to the edge of the boat! The sad part was that just after we hit the zone and started pulling in the fish I got over excited and when I struck one of the fish I accidentally hit the button on the reel and that was the end of using the Quantum for the day and had to switch to the Crestfires. I won?t make that mistake again!

So you put on the creature bait and didnt take it off. It outfished yumdingers??

Was it a brush hog type or what rob?? You say you also just fished them ALL MOJO hey..??

Hi Seadog? I use all hooks and haven?t really found a favourite although I do like the Owner Hooks? Yip I left the Creatures baits on till the entire packet was finished? they don?t last more than one and sometimes two fish because they are very soft. Yes it does look similar to a brush hog but an oversized one? much fatter body and much more frilly things on its tail? actually it?s similar but quite different to a brush hog. And yes all mojo.

Thinking about the hooks I use I tend to prefer the extra wide ones? I know there is a special acronym for them but can?t remember it right now? it?s not the long straight hooks.

hehe, making nests for those fish eagle rob??? Dont worry I once gave mr bass such a clout of a strike and my drag was set on minimum the fish eagles also started circling looking for there newly formed nest. I always set my drag to min when I have finished fishing, this time I forgot to set it when I started fishing the next time :oops: Also wont do that again

Indeed! The Fish Eagle was overhead at the time and making his calling noises so I just responded. It?s good to know it also happens to the best of us and not just the new Quantum owners nt paying attention. I?m taking some extra Berkley Big Game with just in case? I?m also taking some 15lb line just in case I loose any fish on my 10lb line. I hate the 15lb and above line but my mate had a lunker snap his line at Inanda on Sat but his line was old and in dire need of ending up in the bin! I still think I can win the Triton on 10lb line.
