Waterworks seeping sewage


KRUGERSDORP – Up to 18 megalitres of raw, untreated sewage is seeping per day into the ground at the Percy Stewart Waterworks.

The plant is in desperate need of repair. Walls are cracked and held together with steel cables. The processing machines are breaking down and a third of all dams are not operating.

About 30 megalitres of raw sewage (40% more than capacity) is still running through the works. This means water is released with only 63% of the required purification level of 95%.

Also only 12 megalitres is released into the Blougatspruit which means 18 megalitres are disappearing somewhere in the system.

The spruit is the main water source for the Cradle of Humankind heritage site.

Mogale City said the municipality was short of money to fix the problem. – CNS.

I have been defending my birth place now long enough. My oldest son keep on telling me that he is outta here after completing his degree at the end of the year and I keep on telling him that the answer is not to run away. I have always had a positive outlook on SA, hoping that we would work through these problems, but I'm afraid with all the latest technological breakthroughs our Governmunt has achieved :blue-lol: The distant shores are starting to look mighty attractive.

Why is it that these people have absolutely no concept of maintenace? Eish, it it works today, it will work forever!

We know a lady that used to teach at a small school. When these people took over, the first thing they did was cut the maintenance budget from R80 000 a year to R500 a year. The second thing they did was increase their salaries. :blue-confused:

I think this little story holds a clue as to what happened to most municipalities, government departments, and of course good old eskom the day they started taking over.

And believe me, things are going to get a lot worse before they get better....

Eskom has stated that it is politically incorrect to use the term "black out", and that we should rather use the term "previously lit area". :blue-biggrin:

Also Harties one of the people working for me had his brother and cousin that went fishing at Harties. They unfortunately came in to contact with the water, probably had a swim, and they are both in ICU at the moment with which looks like blisters on their brains. The doctor’s reckon it might be related to the chemicals that they are pumping into the water at the moment. Please make members aware.

I also heard this morning that they are busy netting fish at Harties in order to cut down on the fish populations, apparently have gill nets all over the place.

As part of the 4 year Harties redemption programme, a contract has been awarded to net the carp and barble in Harties, but this is supposed to start at last light and nets are supposed to be removed by first light. For the record, Daniel (AKA Turtle man) was swimming in Harties last weekend along with 10 other sea cadets and none of them are sick!!!
