How does the Magnetic clutch/brake work and how should one use it with that other brake on the other side.

also what does that 1 to 10 mean on the Magnetic Clutch/brake.

My Magnetic thingy is set to 4 and I only play with the other brake and taught myself to use my thumb to brake the spool just before the lure hits the water to prevent overwind.

But I want to learn to use my baitcaster to its full potential.

Hi Pottie.

Go back and read what I wrote in the forums under Equipment then Reels then Abu 6 star
Essentially the magnetic brake controls backlash of the line in the second half of the cast, or when the bait is slowing down. The other knob is to set the spool tension and generally works in the first half of the cast and controls the speed of the spool as the cast is initiated. The magnetic setting 1-10 NORMALLY means that 1 has the minimal amount of friction, so is more difficult to control backlashes. 10 is then the stiffer setting and you should probably start practising casting with the setting closer to 10 and the spool tension pretty firm. You will notice that if you loosen the spool tension knob, then you will be able to move the spool from side to side as it will be loose. Tighten up the knob until there is minimal movement, but do not overtighten !!! Try with the stiff settings and as you improve, loosen the spool and the mag brake.

Good luck, and do not give up if you get frustrating overwinds. Also, practise in the garden so you don't waste time and get infuriated on the water.

Thanks for the info Drew. I will have a look at that topic.

I did practise in the back garden and I am able to cast to about 30 meters with a jerkbait (The wood fish thingy with the 2 hooks cut off - Rapala looking, but cheap brand one) on. I had a few overwinds but nothing to serious. I only had one nasty one, but did somehow manage to get it right again. The guy at the shop gave me some pointers and some info to help me. He also gave alot of info, but I can't remember everything.

All the advice in the world will help... but practice, practice, practice..... The best way to learn!!!! You have the basics and the pointers, it's up to practice which will give you experience and better control over your rig!!!!!

I bought my first baitcaster over 15yrs ago and occationally still get over-winds!!!!

I?m almost happy with my rods and reels? I have 4 Shimano Crucial?s from very light to medium heavy? 3 of 7? and 1 of 6?8? (the newest one). Then I have a Quantum Tour edition PT, the Energy PT and an Acurist PT? I just need one more reel and I would like it to be another Tour Edition but I?m not sure my sweet wife will be too happy? mind you it could go on my Santa list!

Yes there is? in fact my Santa list is very short? it consists of?

1 x Quantum Tour Edition PT
1 x Quantum Spinning reel? yes I think there may just be room for one spinning reel on my boat.
2 x Long sleeve Fishing Shirts
1 x Long Fishing pants
1 x Fishing Rod and Reel holder

What else can I add to the list?

I went to look for a decent long sleeved fishing shirt at Cape Union Mart today and they had bugger all? so I went onto Cabelas to have a look see and ended up ordering the Advanced Anglers Pro rod bag, some Yum fork tail Dingers I hadn?t seen before, two different types of fishing shirts, a bass t-shirt and a line respooler holder thingy. Now I feel fulfilled for the day.
